Richard Barrall Obituary

Richard Earl Barrall
Former Allentown resident Richard Dick Earl Barrall, died Sunday, February 13, 2005, in Moses Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro, North Carolina. Dick was born October 23, 1929, to Allentown residents Raymond Earl Barrall and Amelia (Wieand) Barrall. He attended Allentown public schools, graduating from Allentown High School in 1947. He married his high school sweetheart, Dolores Margaret Normile, on April 15, 1949. Settling in Allentown, Dick and Dolores started their family with the birth of their daughter Michelle Jean in 1952, followed by daughter Audrey Lynn in 1955. He had a long and distinguished career in the heating and air conditioning field. Having gone to work at a young age to assist his family, he exhibited the strong work ethic and dedication which he would be known for and which served him his entire life. He began working for Larson Supply Company while still in high school, with sales and administrative responsibilities. In 1959, he took a position with Chet Adams Co. and relocated to Greensboro, N.C. In 1964, he took a position with Emerson Electric, rising to national sales manager for the Electro-Air Division in 1967. The position with Emerson Electric brought Dick and his family to Pittsburgh. Desiring to spend more time with his family, in 1971 Dick joined Carrier Corporation as sales manager for commercial and residential accounts and brought the family back to Greensboro. While with Carrier Corporation, Dicks outstanding performance in sales and management resulted in his membership in the Carrier Masters Club. In addition to his career and family, he made time to further his own education and to contribute to his community. He was an instructor in the Allentown and Bethlehem school systems in the apprentice program for heating and air conditioning service. Early in his professional career, he attended Lehigh University, obtaining a certificate in business management in 1958. He was a member of the Greensboro Electrical Examining Board from 1977 to 1986, for which he was acknowledged by the City of Greensboro for outstanding community service. Dick will be deeply missed by his family, who loved him dearly. All who knew or met Dick knew him to be a kind and generous man. He was open and friendly, yet reserved and always willing to help. He loved sports, whether playing or as a fan, following his Dodgers and the U.N.C. Tarheels. But above all, he was dedicated to his family. Survivors: Wife of 55 years, Dolores M. Barrall of Greensboro; daughters, Michelle Jean Shepard and husband Robert Shepard of High Point, North Carolina, Audrey L. Barrall and husband David Ramos of St. Helena, California; grandchildren, Christopher Michael Shepard and wife Mandy, and Katie Lynn Shepard, all of High Point, Amelia Barrall Ramos and Jenna Gillian Barrall Ramos, both of St. Helena; great-grandchild, Aiden Michael Shepard of High Point; sisters, Ruth Elizabeth Traub and her husband Dick, Carol Binder and husband Dale, and Cherie William, and brother, John Phillip Barrall and wife Molly, all of Allentown. I, too, express my sympathy to Dick's wife and family. There was no mention in the obituary of Dick's distinguished service to the Lehigh Valley Timing Association, a "hot rod club" of the 1950's. Under mentor Dopey Duncan, Dick and a few dozen other young men developed the first drag racing strip in the Eastern United States at Convair Airport in 1955. (There is a reunion of this group on May 15, 2005 in Allentown.) Dick's name appeared on the corporate papers when Lehigh Valley Timing Association was formed - he was one of the original directors. The corporation still exists today. We all lost touch with Dick, and were saddened to learn of his death this week.
