Ruby Hollifield Miller
March 16, 1931 - January 15, 2021
Mrs. Ruby Hollifield Miller, 89, of Marion, passed away Friday, Jan. 15, 2021, at Rose Hill Retirement Center.
A native of McDowell County, Ruby was born March 16, 1931, and was a daughter of the late John Reid Hollifield and Mamie Morgan Hollifield. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Vernon Miller; and brothers, Claude Hollifield and John Reid Hollifield Jr.
Ruby was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Marion where she worked behind the scenes making members know they were loved through her baked goods, cards, phone calls, and visits. She also volunteered with First Baptist Church of Marion in the Operation Inasmuch program by serving and delivering meals. Ruby was the secretary for the personnel department at the American Thread Company where she retired after a long and faithful career. Her love of baking was a gift she graciously shared with her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She and her husband, Frank, were members of the local Master Gardner's program where she shared her knowledge of plants to bring beauty to her home and to the homes of her extended family. Ruby had a mischievous side and loved to laugh. One of her favorite things to do was to don a variety of headwear in order to make others around her enjoy life as much as her. She was a woman of strength and dignity who inspired others around her to work hard and do their best at everything they attempted. She was a model of Christian faithfulness, who liked to study God's Word, and left many lives the better for having known her.
Left to cherish Ruby's memory are her two daughters, Carolyn Young and husband, Steve, of Marion and Sara Workman and husband, Tim, of Marion; one brother-in-law, Clyde Miller and wife, Cheri, of Marion; five grandchildren, Stephanie Pace and husband, Barry, Stacey Unks and husband, Michael, Jacob Workman and wife, Megan, Hannah Varvaris and husband, Philip, and Leah Hess and husband, Lucas; and eight great-grandchildren, Shelby and Sophie Unks and Jeremiah Bennett, Mia and Selah Pace, Reid and Lyla Varvaris, and Asher Workman.
The family would like to thank the staff at Rose Hill Retirement Center who gave exemplary care to our Ruby in very tender and generous ways and brought joy to Ruby and our family by laughing, loving, and ministering to her needs every day. The family would also like to extend a special thanks to Luann Walker, Ruby's Hospice nurse, for caring faithfully for Ruby in our stead, while we were not able to be with her in person. She was our voice, our hands, and our eyes in caring for our little Ruby. Thank you all.
A private family funeral service was scheduled for Monday, Jan. 18, at 2 p.m., at the Oak Grove Cemetery of Marion, with Dr. Scott Hagaman officiating. The family will hold a celebration of life at a later date once COVID-19 allows for us to gather and laugh, sing, hug and share cherished memories of Ruby's life.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in Mrs. Miller's memory are asked to consider First Baptist Church of Marion, 99 N Main St., Marion, NC 28752; to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, 374 Hudlow Rd., Forest City, NC 28043; or to Rose Hill Retirement Community, 120 Fleming Ave., Marion, NC 28752.
