Jewell Whitney

Jewell Carden Whitney, age 98 of Smyrna, passed away Monday, July 11, 2022.

A graveside service will be held at 10 AM Friday, July 15, 2022 at the Mountain View Memorial Park Cemetery in Marietta, Georgia. Jewell was preceded in death by her first husband Carl J. Carden and her second husband Harold Whitney, along with 6 brothers and sisters. She is survived by her son Gene Carden of Savannah, daughter Janice (Jim) Pitts of Smyrna, brother Douglas (Alyse) Vining of North Richland Hills, TX, grandchildren Jimmy (Stephanie) Pitts, Jeff Pitts, Jonathan (Joy) Pitts, Jennings (Kimberly) Pitts, Joey Pitts, Robert (Christie) Carden and Richard Carden, and 16 great grandchildren.

Jewell was an outstanding business woman in Smyrna for over 25 years. She began working at the Bank of Smyrna in 1964 and remained there until retiring in 1987.

She was a member and president of the American Business Women's Association (ABWA) of Smyrna. She was recognized by the Chamber of Commerce as a business leader. She received an Associate Banking Degree at the University of Georgia. Jewell was a member of Piedmont Baptist Church in Marietta.

Jewell and her husband, Carl, were avid square dancers and were members of several dance clubs. After retiring and Carl's death, she was a volunteer at Kennistone Hospital and Douglasville Hospital. In 1996 she married Harold Whitney of Atlanta. They also enjoyed dancing especially ballroom dancing and we're involved in many dancing classes and activities. Braves baseball and the Atlanta Opera were very much a part of her life. (She was even present at the game Henry Aaron hit his 750th home run).

Jewell also called "Mama Jewell" lived in Douglasville until her health required her to move to Del Mar Gardens in Smyrna in 2016 at age 94.
