Benny Gomes, 92, recently passed away in Turlock, California. Benny was a long time resident of Newman and Gustine. For the past several years he has resided in Turlock. Benny was born in Tulare, California to the late Bernard and Margaret Gomes and grew up on various ranches on the Westside.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 28 years, Georgena Franzen, also his siblings, brothers; Tony Gomes, Frank Gomes, John Gomes and sisters; Mary Ormonde, Rose Borges and Gertie Raganti. He is survived by his second wife, Mary Gomes.
As a young man, Benny worked for the Westside Creamery, but realized with his charismatic personality, selling was an ideal job for him. He worked in Newman for M&M Chevrolet and Los Banos for Paradiso Automotive. Thompson Chevrolet in Patterson was his last employment before retiring. He took great pride in selling cars to three generations of families. Benny was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Lions Club and a Volunteer Fireman for Newman.
He is survived by his daughter Agnes Stone (Roy) and son Dan Gomes (Margaret) both of Merced; grandchildren Michelle Fagundes, Paul Stone, Deanne Cortez and Phillip Gomes. Also six remarkable great grandchildren.
A Rosary and Memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 16th at 10:30am at Our Lady of Mercy, 459 West 21st St. Merced.
