Janet Devine Obituary

Janet Theresa Devine

February 22, 1933 - February 18, 2024

Merced, California - Janet was born on February 22, 1933, in Brooklyn, New York to Harvey and Florence Doyer. She passed away on February 18, 2024, at home in Merced, California.

Janet graduated from Kings County School of Nursing in Brooklyn, New York in 1954. In 1955, Janet married her childhood friend, John Devine, whom she had known since she was 9 years old. They were married at St. Sylvester's Catholic Church in Brooklyn. For their honeymoon, they drove to California to start their new life together. Janet started as a Registered Nurse at Merced General Hospital in 1956. During her 33-year career, she worked in the Emergency, OR and Post-OP departments. During this time the hospital was renamed Merced Community Medical Center. Janet retired from MCMC in 1989.

During her retirement, Janet enjoyed traveling the world, attending the annual women's Retreat in the Santa Cruz mountains and the annual Gilroy Garlic Festival with family and friends. Janet was a faithful member of St. Patrick's Parish and served as a Eucharistic minister for many years.

In Janet's later years, she was well cared for by her daughter, Cecilia, son, Andrew and LLC caregivers Rocio, Adrianna and Aidee. The family would also like to acknowledge and give thanks to Janet's doctor Dr. Nicolas De La Pena for his outstanding care, Frances Garcia, her longtime housekeeper and Barbara Ryan for caring for Janet's spiritual needs.

Janet is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, John Devine, her parents Harvey L. Doyer and Florence L. (Kotchie) Doyer; brother Harvey W. Doyer; sister-in-law Carolyn Smith (Albert), niece Patricia Peterson, sister-in-law Shirley Devine and brother-in-law Arthur Devine who recently passed.

She is survived by her children Melissa Devine, Andrew Devine and Cecilia Kinney (Tony), sister-in-law Maria Doyer, cousin Catherine Chitty, nieces and nephews Sandra Wickham, David Smith, Michael Smith (Janet), Michelle White (Richard), Danny Devine (Kimberlynn) and her lifelong friends Shirley Facciani and Judy Mierzeski.

Burial arrangements were made in the care of Kathy Whitton from Whitton Family Funeral Service. Father Antonio Eguiguren from St. Patrick's Parish officiated the burial.

Janet was laid to rest with her husband, John, at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery.

Mom, we love you with all our hearts and will miss you beyond measure. Rest in peace, in the loving arms of Jesus.

Janet & John Devine were the loveliest people and close friends with my mom. We spent several holidays together and enjoyed spending time with them. I'm sure the family is saddened by their loss and wish for healing and peace to them.

Losing your parents, even in adulthood, can make one feel like an orphan, but we aren´t really because they are just waiting for us to join them beyond the veil. We are left with memories and sadness but that too will pass away when we are reunited. Rest in His wonderful Peace Janet. Bless you Cecilia, Andrew and Melissa. All my love, Dawn Byrne Zarate

I met Janet as a fellow parishioner of St. Patrick's in Merced. When I attended my first retreat at St. Clare's Retreat Center in Soquel, Jan was part of the group. We also shared nursing as a profession. The following is part of the Florence Nightingale Tribute to Nurses. It's often part of a funeral service or memorial.
SHE WAS THERE
When a Calming, Quiet Presence Was All That Was Needed, She Was There.
In the Excitement and Miracle of Birth or in the Mystery and Loss of Life,
She Was There.
When a Silent Glance Could Uplift a Patient, Family Member or Friend,
She Was There.
At Those Times When the Unexplainable Needed to Be Explained, She Was There.
When the Situation Demanded a Swift Foot and Sharp Mind, She Was There.
When a Gentle Touch, a Firm Push, or an Encouraging Word Was Needed, She Was There.
In Choosing the Best One from a Family's "Thank You" Box of Chocolates,
She Was There.
To Witness Humanity, It's Beauty, In Good Times and Bad Without Judgment
She Was There.
To Embrace the Woes of the World, Willingly, and Offer Hope, She Was There.
And Now That It's Time to Be At the Greater One's Side, She is There.
RIP Jan.

I am so sorry to hear of Janet's passing. I worked with her at MCMC from 1974 until retirement. She is now with her one and only love John. They are peacefully in the presence of God. Bless all of you as you mourn your parents.
