I first learned of Dr. Rico's book "Writing the Natural Way," in 2005 during an Adult Education Creative Writing Class...My life and writing has never been the same...and I just recently recommended this book to someone a few minutes ago, not knowing Dr. Rico passed away...so you, 75 is young to me.
I will continue to recommend her Clustering writing exercise, and her book, as it has helped so many people...Even with degrees from UC Berkeley, SF State, and UCSF...it has been Dr. Rico who gave my academic, and non-academic writing the quality it has today...
Thank You for her heart for learning, and understanding the brain, and even how trauma and other ways shuts down our creativity at the early age of 8...as academics should be fun, and not impinge on the age of learning by 8 years old when academics brings the terrible "Censor" that shuts down our creativity...learning is a lifetime...and she carries that truth into classrooms and relationships daily, with the legacy she leaves us...THANK YOU.

As texts for my college classes, "Making Waves with Words" and "Power through Pain", Gabriele's books prompted profound and inspiring writing from adult learners at Marylhurst University.

I'm so sorry. I didn't know Prof. Rico passed--7 years ago! I took a rare writing class that she taught around 2001 or 2002. I took it so that I could write about my father's passing, and I did. She gently mid-wived my poems about him out of my sadness and confusion. She was an inspiration. If you are family, please know that she made a lasting change in my life.

Professor Rico was a great inspiration to me. She was way ahead of her time - a truly original and creative thinker. It also was humbling and yet a great pleasure to have my work examined so thoroughly by such a thoughtful and caring person. What a truly valuable gift she was to everyone!

I came to know of Gabriele Rico via Tama Kieves' book. I've haven't regretted once buying her book, Writing the Natural Way. Using the mind-mapping or clustering/web-writing techniques helped me sort through feelings, thoughts and words to identify things that happened in my youth. Ms. Rico has taught me how to bring joy to writing, which can be a serious subject. Thank you Gabriele Rico. May you rest easy and be blessed.

I pray that her beautiful spirit rests in eternal peace. I pray too for her family, friends, and loved ones. - Richard V.

I was fortunate enough to call Gabriele my "Mom #2". I knew her as a mother figure, a teacher, a friend, and an inspiration to work and be creative and be better in endless ways. I can't believe she's gone. And she's not, for me.

GABRIELE THE NATURAL WAY
Gabriele Rico Pressman (1937-2013) in memoriam
“We don't stop playing because we grow old,
we grow old because we stop playing.”
--- Satchel Paige
You taught the world to write a natural way,
a playful way for sure. Don't think. Just breathe.
Just undermine what's on your mind and stay
aloof. Just hold your breath and die. Believe.
Let go and breathe back out. You're on again.
Stories and poems we utter naturally;
text vexes us like learning the trombone.
Technique groans to get taught. You actually
danced from your left brain to your right with just
enough of the right kind of love left over
to share, to match all odds. Your lifelong lust
for learning and defiance lasts. Forever.
From Germany to California you,
light-giving Gabriele, you gave us you.

Mrs. Rico was the best and most challenging teacher I ever had, both for German and for the AP English class at Camden High School. I wanted desperately to be just like her. Probably most of her students would say the same thing. Auf Wiedersehen, Frau Rico!

This morning I came across the obituary for GABRIELE LUSSER RICO, a wonderful professor at SJSU from whom I had the great serendipity of taking a lecture class (at that time I was a Home Ec major, not English.) All of these 35 years later, I still remember moments from the class, her nurturing spirit, and still use her "clustering" technique in my approach to thoughts and words. Rest In Peace, Professor, you touched many more lives than you knew in wondrous ways.
