Michael Kanaley Obituary

Michael Kanaley rode his motorcycle in thunderstorms, backpacked through Pakistan and told his Palo Alto software company that he was moving to Brazil - he convinced superiors to let him jet to Silicon Valley for monthly meetings.

"He had this adventurous spirit,'' said longtime friend, Larry Neumann, a software engineer in Mountain View. "Everyone of us wants to live their life that way, but we often let fear overtake us. Not Mike.''

On Jan. 5, the 41-year-old Kanaley, a principal architect at Palo Alto's Tibco Software Inc., was killed in Brazil.

I did not know Michael, but I was touched by how he impacted so many people by living his life to the fullest and so sincerely. A person like that will indeed be missed. I hope that through this tragedy he will continue to be an inspiration to many. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

I am so sorry to hear about this terrible tragedy. I am an American living in Rio, and I can attest to the challenges of violence here. I have driven the very road spoken of in this article from Buzois many times. My wife, who is a Brazilian, often speaks of the sacrifice we Americans make by living in a more dangerous country. I am proud of Mike for living his dream despite the tragic and unexpected consequences.

We are a part of a movement called Rio de Paz designed to draw awareness of the problem of senseless violence in Brasil. As an ONG/NGO we are focused on bringing justice and education here in Brasil, and recently were accredited by the UN. (http://www.riodepaz.org.br)

May Mike rest in peace, and God's grace be upon your family.
