Ron was an amazing leader and Scoutmaster. My favorite memory of him was when I went on Boy Scout Troop 5's 50-mile backpack trip in the Emigrant Wilderness as an adult leader. It was just Ron, me, and about 8 Boy Scouts aged 15-18. We were all focused on training for the trip by hiking, exercising, and collecting gear, and Ron led us thru that for several months before the trip. But on the first day of our trip, I was amazed to learn that Ron had also spent time thinking and planning for the spiritual and leadership growth of the boys. He had prepared a set of daily "Path to Power" talks that he would give us each morning as we ate breakfast. They were basically like his famous "Scoutmaster Minutes" -- short talks about leadership, ethics, morality, and "obeying the Scout Law" to become better people and better leaders. They were well received by the boys (and by me), and gave us something to think and talk about for the rest of that day's march, instead of focusing on how much our muscles ached or how heavy our packs were.

Ron was always doing things like that. He had a deep concern for the welfare of the Scouts and Scout leaders in his troop, and always went that extra distance. What an amazing man and leader -- I count myself so blessed to have gotten to learn from him all those years working together in Scouts.
