Jean Summersett Obituary

Eagle - Jean Stevens Summersett, 72, of Eagle, Idaho passed away March 1, 2023, as the result of an auto accident. Jean was born December 23, 1950, in Emmett, Idaho to Bill and Mary Ellen Stevens. She was the second of five children. She attended Gem County schools and graduated from Emmett High School in 1969. A lifelong learner, Jean earned several degrees: a Bachelor of Arts from both Northwest Nazarene College and American Institute of Holy Land Studies, a Master of Education from The College of Idaho, and at the age of 70, a Doctor of Biblical Studies from Jubilee Graduate School.

Jean married Steve Summersett on March 12, 1977, in Nampa. She was a teacher and counselor at Middleton Jr. High before moving to Texas for Steve's work. While there she served as a high school counselor in the Woodlands School District. They returned to Idaho in 1998 and built a home in Eagle. Jean worked at Micron for many years and at Shadow Butte Elementary in Emmett where she made many lifelong friends. She retired in 2018.

Jean enjoyed life and had a wonderful sense of humor. And (as she always reminded us), she had a good attitude! A seasoned traveler, she visited the Holy Land in 2006 along with her friend, Janet Colburn, and again in 2009. At special sisters' getaways she was the life of the party: baseball games in Las Vegas and Seattle (joined by her brother Bert and his wife, Sandy) and a trip to Alaska. Jean also traveled to many places with her husband, Steve, and her mother-in-law, Helen. For several years she took her dad to Boise State football games.

Jean loved the outdoors, hiking with her friends, June Gempler and Linda Budolfson, having Sunday coffee with Kathy Nesmith, and caring for her mother's yard and flowerbeds. She treasured her family and drove to Emmett several days a week to have lunch and laughs with her mom and sisters. She loved animals, especially her dog, Buster and her cat, Buzz. Many hours were spent dog-sitting for her sisters' dogs, Blu and Jai. Jean's faith was important to her, and she devoted herself to studying the Bible, its history, and the Hebrew language. She and Steve attended Eagle Christian Church.

Jean was preceded in death by her father, Bill; brother-in-law, Rich Thompson, and her father-in-law, George Collins. She is survived by her husband, Steve of Eagle; mother, Mary Ellen Stevens of Emmett; brother, Bert (Sandy) Stevens of Tumwater, WA; sisters, Julie (Rich) Prescott of Nampa, Jennifer (Denny) Colson of Boise, and Jane Thompson of Twin Falls; mother-in-law, Helen Collins of Nampa, George and Marcy Collins of Caldwell, Susie Collins of Walla Walla, WA, and several nieces and nephews.

A viewing will be at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, March 13, 2023, at the Potter Funeral Chapel in Emmett, with a celebration of her life starting at 11:00 A.M. Charitable contributions may be made to your favorite charity in Jean's name.

I was very saddened to learn of Jean's death. She was one of only 3 of us who started first grade at Central Mesa Elementary and then went to all 12 grades of schools together. We only reconnected at our 50th high school reunion in 2019, and I will miss her sweet thoughtful messages that we shared since then. She was a wonderful friend. My condolences to her family.
