Cal Bitner Obituary

COVINGTON -Cal Driver Bitner, 96, of Covington, passed away Friday, Sept. 6, 2013. He was born in Miami County, the only child of Jacob Emory and Bertie (Driver) Bitner.
He attended the Blind Corners one room school house near his parents' farm on what is now Highway 185. He graduated from Bradford High School. Cal first worked for Petersimes in Gettysburg, delivering and installing incubators across the country from Wisconsin to Cornell University in New York. Cal later worked for Hobart Brothers in Troy, where he remained employed for 43 ½ years and was a member of the Hobart Milestone Club. He served with the United States Navy Seabees at the end of WWII, stationed in Bermuda.
Cal married Cathryn Gibson Bitner from Greenville, and together they raised their five children along the Stillwater River, Route 48, Covington. He and Cathryn celebrated 50 years of marriage in 1989. Cal and Cathryn were dedicated and active members of the Covington United Church of Christ, where Cal served on the board of trustees, was head usher, and was an all around fix-it guy for many years. Cal was an avid gardener and was well known for his homegrown popcorn. In retirement, he worked for Pearson-Jackson Funeral Home. Although his typical humility would prevent him from such an acknowledgment, Cal was an inspiration to his family and friends. He never met a stranger.
Cal was preceded in death by his wife, Cathryn, and his grandson, Lon Bitner. He is survived by his children, George and Lou Bitner of Hamilton, Bill and Jeanie Bitner of Covington, Linda and Bruno Schroeder of Ocean Springs, Miss., Donna and Bill Weikert of Covington, Tom Bitner of Bozeman, Mont; nine grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Covington United Church of Christ, 115 N. Pearl St., Covington. Pastor Lynn Labs will officiate, with interment following at Miami Memorial Park, Covington. The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Monday at Jackson-Sarver Funeral Home, 10 S. High St., Covington. If so desired, memorial contributions may be made to Covington United Church of Christ or Hospice of Miami County. Online memories may be left for the family at www.jackson-sarver.com.

My deepest condolences to the Bitner Family. Cal was always such a welcome and pleasant visitor at my parent's home. Even though he was the older one, he would frequently walk down the road to check on them in their later years. Klinger Road will never be the same.

Cal was so friendly and every time I saw him he had a big smile on his face. We shared a grandpa. Samuel bitner married my grandmaother, Bertha Wagaman and they shared many years together. I remember going to Uncle Jake and Aunt Berties. Cal will be greatly missed.

Deep sympathy to the entire Bitner family -- Cal has been a beloved fixture in Covington, particularly at Covington UCC. I can never think of attending church while growing up without Cal coming to mind as one of the first people greeting me each Sunday. His devotion to family and community was deep and real -- he will be missed!

Our world won't be the same without Cal, and we will miss him greatly, especially in church sitting at the end of "our" pew. Not a Sunday morning went by without him greeting us, shaking our hands, and asking us how we were doing. God really did something special when he blessed us with Cal's friendship. He was a great neighbor to Cliff and came to visit us often when we lived there. He even shared some of his sugar creme birthday pie with us. Although we are very sad at this time, we also rejoice in knowing that he had a great welcoming committee to greet him in heaven. Our sympathy, love, and prayers go out to all of you.

Our most sincere sympathy to all the Bitner families. Cal and Cathryn were two special people to us. They had faith in us when starting our construction business in the early 1960's. Such wonderful memories we have. Love, Don and Dixie Magee

Sorry for the loss of Cal. He will be greatly missed. It will seem strange not seeing him in the yard on our many trips past the house.
