TROY - Joan L. (Howard) Burnside, age 89, of Troy, OH passed away on July 14, 2025, at her residence. She was born on May 31, 1936, in Berea, Kentucky to the late Willis and Mabel (Bullens) Howard.
Joanie is survived by her daughter: Angela Wong; grandson: David Wong; great granddaughters: Ava Marie, Jenna Leigh, Lexi Eve and Kelsie Jade Wong; loving sons: Jamie (Linda Hurwitz) Bullens and their children Jason (Kelli) Bullens and Jessica (Matt) Bullens Snyder and their children Jayden and Abbey and Steven Bullens; Fiance': Terry Netzley; brother-in-law: Douglas K. (Ann Harshbarger) Burnside and their daughter: Valissa (Ron) McCarren and her children Justin, Kami, Ashli and Kylie; sister-in-law: Judy Burnside Edmunds (Deceased) and her sons Matthew and Mark Waters, Desmond Edwards and their family; special family including: Renee Howard, Tamara Howard, Clayton Howard, Sean Howard, Dustin Howard, Laurie (Jim) Gunder Sasanko and their children Julia, Jenna and Jessica and their families, Judy Gunder, Joe Plantz and Adam Plantz. Joanie is also survived by numerous cousins and endless friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: David L. Burnside; brothers: William "Billy" Howard and Harold "Hal" Howard; sister: Wilma Jane Howard; nephews: Kent Howard and Brian Gunder and sister-in-law: Janet Burnside Plantz.
Joanie was a 1955 graduate of Troy High School. She was a member and Deaconess of First United Church of Christ, Troy and member of the nominating committee, church life committee, Class 4 Sunday School, and Share a Meal. She was a member of the Red Hats Society. Joanie was formerly employed with Troy City Schools, Clyde Marr Insurance and Kettering Hospital where she served as Hearts, the clown and took up boxing at the coaxing of the doctors with Jab City Boxing of Dayton. She enjoyed walking and traveling and loved her beloved cat, Catzanova.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at Baird Funeral Home. Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, July 28, 2025, at First United Church of Christ in Troy with Rev. Lauren Allen officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Troy. Memorial contributions may be made to: Ohio's Hospice of Miami County or First United Church of Christ. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.bairdfuneralhome.com.

Loved Joanie. Met her in high-school, Troy. So outgoing and she enjoyed the kids coming into the principals office!! We both worked there during free class time. Will miss her, rest in peace Joanie.
