Joseph Zaientz Obituary

Dr. Joseph R. Zaientz
It is with great sadness that the family of Dr. Joseph Richard Zaientz announces his passing on March 11, 2023, at age 84. Joe (Doc) was predeceased by his parents Harry Zaientz and Edith (Perlin) Zaientz. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years Fredda (Pollans) Zaientz, by his three great sons Jack (Stephanie), Luke (Alice), and Nate (Sara), and his six wonderful grandchildren Eva, Lila, Sadie, Mollie, Samuel, and Benjamin. He also leaves his sister Helen Liveten, his brothers-in-law Ken (Maria) Pollans, and Larry (Barbara Baum) Pollans, and many dear friends.
Joe graduated from Cheshire Academy, Duke University, and the University of Pennsylvania School of Dentistry. He leaves an admirable legacy of participation in his community in many areas. He was in the Army for three years including one as Captain in the Dental Corps in Vietnam. After he and Fredda married, they settled in Haddam where Joe established his dental practice. He became a volunteer fireman in the Haddam Neck Volunteer Fire Department and served over forty years as fire fighter, training officer, secretary, captain, chief, certified EMT and president of the Board of Directors of the Haddam Fire Department. He was active in Haddam Public Health as treasurer, then as president for three terms. In 1994 he established the Haddam Shad Museum to commemorate and celebrate the history of shad fishing on the Connecticut River. He recently donated the Museum to the Haddam Historical Society to ensure its continuation. He also drove for meals-on-wheels delivery for over twelve years.
Joe also actively supported his faith community at Congregation Adath Israel in Middletown. He served on the Board of Directors, on various committees, and as vice-president of the synagogue.
Even with all those activities he still enjoyed participating in family affairs and pursuing many interesting hobbies. Joe was an amazing man who will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and associates.
Funeral arrangements are in the care of the Doolittle Funeral Home. The funeral will be on Sunday, March 19 at 1:00 p.m. at Congregation Adath Israel in Middletown, 8 Broad Street, with burial following in Rock Landing Cemetery in Haddam Neck where full military honors will be accorded. I was remembering Dr. Zaientz after a visit to my dentist today. I decided to look him up and was very sorry to hear of his passing. He was my childhood dentist in the 70's and 80's. I recently turned 50 and am proud to say that I´ve never had a single cavity or problem with my teeth. I credit Dr. Zaientz for giving me such a good early start in dental care. He was always so kind that I not only didn´t fear going to the dentist - I loved it! Especially because a good visit always ended with a trip to the "Treasure Chest" to pick out a special prize. As an adult, I can appreciate how much more he did for his community than taking care of our teeth. I hope his family take solace in knowing what a lasting and positive mark he made on the world, and that he is remembered well by more people than they probably realize.

I never met Joseph but I've been lucky enough to meet his son Luke through our shared work on the PLAY Sports Coalition. Luke gives his time freely to assist underserved youth athletes just like his father gave his time to the faith community. Luke is one of my favorite people because he uses humor everyday to bring us back to earth. I know much of Luke's traits come from his father. I am happy that Joseph still has a lasting legacy through his three children and six grandchildren, the world is lucky for this. My condolences and love to the family as you remember Joseph.

Joe Zaientz was our family dentist, but he was also a family friend. He and his wife Fredda and his kids visited our house many times. I have told many people that I never had novocaine for any dental work until I was in my 30s and had moved away from Middletown. Joe was such a gentle, sweet man, I never felt any pain with any of the fillings. He was funny too, with a ready smile! The world is a little dimmer without him.

Joe was my family's dentist back in the Seventies (and probably Eighties, although I'd left home by then). He was also a family friend. I still remember visiting the house they were building and being in awe at its beauty. The Zaientzes were wonderful people. My condolences to all who Joe left behind. He was a really sweet guy.

Joe and Fredda were Chuck's and my first friends in Middletown. Loved spending time with them, especially singing folk music with Joe's guitar guiding the way. Sending love and prayers to Fredda, Jack, Luke, and Nathan.

Joe was a good guy, citizen, family man and friend. We worked together on many Haddam Fire Department administrative issues. We also spent nice times fishing on Long Island Sound in Joe´s boat. I enjoyed the Shad museum and Joe´s entertaining shad stories. I will especially miss his upbeat attitude.
