Valentino Pattavina Obituary

Valentino J. Pattavina
Valentino "Val" James Pattavina died peacefully on May 10, 2023 in Middletown, CT, at the age of 93 with his loving wife, Bernadette, at his side. Val was born on September 11, 1929 in Middletown, CT. He was the son of Giuseppe and Filomena "Minnie" Milardo Pattavina. Val grew up on Hamlin St. in Middletown with his close-knit family, consisting of his parents, two brothers and five sisters. He entered the Navy in 1948, where he served as a radio operator aboard the U.S.S. Philippine Sea and the U.S.S. Smalley. Using the GI Bill to further his education, he graduated from the University of Hartford Ward School of Technology. Val worked at several local companies, followed by a 25-year tenure at the U.S. Post Office as a clerk. Val loved to make homemade bread and fried dough for family and friends. Val loved "cowboy" (country) music, the New York Yankees, and serving the Lord. Val was a communicant of Saint Sebastian Church in Middletown, where he taught catechism and confirmation classes for forty years. He was also a Eucharistic minister and the director of religious education for over ten years. Along with his wife of sixty-eight years, Val enjoyed watching the UCONN girls play basketball. Above all else, Val loved his family and spending time with the "Over-the-Hill Gang" reminiscing about the good old days. Val will be remembered as a loving and compassionate man of faith, with a hilarious and charming sense of humor that captivated those around him and made his presence entertaining and delightful. Val is survived by his beloved wife Bernadette Pattavina, and their loving daughters, Wendy Vinci and husband Lou, Lynda Emard and husband Michael, and Dr. Valerie Fenn and husband Thomas. Val is survived by sister Geraldine Russo, and sister Florence Chamis and husband Chris. Val is the cherished grandfather of Caitlin Gould and fiancé Michael Roy, two great-grandchildren, Kayden Jay Gauthier, Zeplyn Rae Gould, and many loving nieces and nephews. Val is predeceased by his brother Emanuel and wife Ann Pattavina, brother Sebastian and wife Gaetina Pattavina, sister Sophie and husband Joe Schoenborn, sister Josephine and husband Dominic Pailillo, sister Irene and husband Fran Gibson, brother-in-law Sal Russo, and beloved grandson Christian Gould.
A Funeral Liturgy will be held Wednesday May 24th at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Sebastian Church, 155 Washington Street, Middletown. Friends may call at Biega Funeral Home 3 Silver Street Middletown, on Tuesday May 23rd from 5 to 7 pm. Burial with military honors will be held at Saint Sebastian Cemetery.

I am Cathy Russo and I am so sad to not have my best friend. When I was going into St. Sebastian Church on Sunday Mass every week Val would stand up and give me a hug and a kiss. It was such a great day every week for me to. He is always still going to be my very best friend forever. I miss him so very much.
Bernadette I will always be by your side to help you with anything you need to do or to talk about anything you also need for that. I will help you no matter what you need.
God Bless Val who is up in Heaven and you are a special friend of mine. I Will see you soon.
Love you,
Cathy Russo
