Ethel Barbara Meredith Obituary

Ethel Barbara Halliday Read Meredith went to be with the LORD on August 18, 2014, at the age of 82. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at her daughter's home Ethel and Tim Harmon's in Camden, Delaware. Ethel was born in Roxbough, Pennsylvania, on November 21, 1931. She was the daughter of the late Orville Roosevelt and Myrtle Friedrich Halliday. Her family moved to Smyrna, Delaware in 1945.

She was a leader for Chesapeake Bay Girl Scout Council for both the Brownie and Junior troops for over 15 years. She was a past member of Townsend Immanuel United Methodists church, and a 3M's member, also a member of Woodside United Methodist Church and serviced on the broad at both churches and the Downstate Delaware Genealogical Society in Dover. Ethel was single parent of the year for Delaware in 1972.

Ethel worked at Playtex and Burn's Security for General Foods in Dover. She drove a school bus for Broadmeadow School in Middletown, Johnson's bus service in Townsend and a bus aid for Dawson's Bus service in Camden, Ethel and her husband Edwin own and ran Big Ed's Market in Camden.

Her hobbies were collecting cover bridges and lighthouses also traveling thought out the United States to see both the cover bridges and lighthouses. Ethel loved working on plastic canvas to make her Christmas Villages. She also received first place for her Needlework in plastic canvas on her Christmas Village at the Delaware State Fair in Harrington. Her hobbies were working in her flower garden, working on puzzles, reading and playing cards. She enjoyed traveling and visiting her family. She loved being a grandmother.

Along with to her father and mother Ethel was preceded in death by his first Husband James B. Read (1966) of Townsend and 2nd husband T. Edwin Meredith (1983) of Camden, 2 Brothers Harry and Orville Halliday, Son-in-law David Wagaman, granddaughter Elizabeth Wyatt and step –mother Dorothy Hammond Curry Halliday.

She is survived by her 6 children, 5 daughters, Barbara Wagaman of Kenansville, North Caroline, Jane Guessford her husband Reece of Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, Mary Hobson her husband Jeffrey of Berry, Kentucky, Nancy Wyatt her husband Patrick Sr. of Clayton, Delaware, Ethel Harmon her husband Tim of Camden, Delaware and her only son Mark Read of Camden, DE, and 13 grandchildren Tamara Wagaman, Barbara Ann Brannen, Christopher, Nathanial, Jamie and Brandi Guessford, Jennifer Terry, Patricia Huber, Kimberly Wilhoit, John Hobson Jr., Patrick Jr. and Nicholas Wyatt and Specialist Benjamin Harmon US Army and 23 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. 4 sisters, Myrtle Skinner of Cherry Hill, Maryland, Doris Cahall, Betty McDonald her husband Ed, Mae Atkinson and a sister in law Barbara Halliday all living in Delaware. Her dear sweet dog that she loved very much Tongue Two. She leaves behind many family and friends nieces and nephews whom she loved very much.
The family would especially like to thank the nurses and care givers at Companionate Care Hospice of Millsboro for their wonderful care of Ethel and the comfort and compassion to our family in this difficult times.

Viewing will be held from 6 to 8 pm, Thursday, August 21, 2014, in Pippin Funeral Home, Inc., 119 West Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming. Funeral Services will take place 2 pm, Friday, August 22, 2014, in funeral home; followed by the burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Compassionate Care Hospice, 28467 DuPont Blvd. Suite 6, Millsboro, DE 19966.
