William C. "Pop" Askin
May 10, 1939 – November 9, 2025
William C. "Pop" Askin, 86, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, November 9, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on May 10, 1939, Pop lived a life defined by honor, devotion, and a steadfast commitment to family, community, and country.
He was the kind of man who showed up, every time, for every person who mattered to him. His quiet strength, quick wit, and gentle wisdom were constants to those around him. To his family, he was more than a father or grandfather; he was a confidant, a quiet teacher, and a trusted friend.
He built a legacy not through accolades but through the way he treated people. He believed in doing things the right way and in treating others with honesty and respect. His warmth, his stories, and his steady presence will continue to guide those who loved him.
A proud 1957 graduate of Newton High School, Pop earned his degree from Franklin & Marshall College in 1961. Immediately afterward, he answered the call to serve. Pop joined the United States Marine Corps, serving on active duty from 1961 to 1965 and continuing in the Marine Corps Reserve for an additional ten years. Rising to the rank of Captain, he carried the values of the Corps: honor, discipline, integrity, and leadership, into every chapter of his life.
For the last ten years of his life, Pop served as Chief Financial Officer of Askin & Hooker, LLC, Attorneys at Law in Sparta. He was part of the founding team of the firm in 2016 and played a critical role in the operations, financial reporting, and steady growth of the firm until his passing.
Prior to his time at the law firm, Pop dedicated more than three decades of his career to the banking industry, retiring in 2000 from JPMorgan Chase. His expertise and leadership also took him beyond the U.S., including four years in Romania as a consultant for Romtelecom. He loved to work – his career spanned 60 plus years. But all who had the opportunity to work with him over those years know that more than the work itself, Pop cherished the people he worked with, building friendships with colleagues across the county and around the world that lasted a lifetime.
Pop was also deeply committed to his community. He served as Treasurer for the Lake Mohawk Preservation Foundation from 2014 to 2024, was Chairman of the Labor Day 5K Charitable Corporation since its founding in 2016 and was actively involved as a member of both the Sussex County and Sparta Chambers of Commerce.
Pop is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Nancy (née Beierle) Askin; his two sons, William (Patty) and Thomas (Erin); and his five adored grandchildren, Bradley, Brooke, Courtney, Liam, and Stuart. He was predeceased by his father, William Kine Askin; his mother, Dorothy Colvin Askin; and his sister, Jean Askin Dederer.
A private service for immediate family will be held in the coming days, followed by a Celebration of Life at Lake Mohawk Country Club on December 13, 2025, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. Family, friends, and colleagues are all invited to celebrate his legacy. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages acts of kindness and time spent with loved ones-just as Pop did throughout his life.
