Nick Chavez, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and long-time Moab resident, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2026, at Canyonlands Care Center in Moab, Utah. He was 91 years old and had lived in Moab for nearly 60 years.
Born on March 5, 1934, to Daniel and Maria Chavez, Nick married Eva Marie Olsen on December 4, 1955, and they were later sealed in the Manti Temple on August 19, 1965. He spent his life as a miner, working hard and providing for his family.
Nick had a zest for life and a love of adventure. He enjoyed golfing, riding his motorcycle, and square dancing. He was passionate about coaching little league football for many years and was best known for giving everyone he loved a playful nickname. As a father and grandfather, Nick was always there when his family needed him, and he took pride in each of their accomplishments.
He is survived by his children, Sandy Lopez of Moab, UT; Nick Jr. (Twila) Chavez of Farmington, NM; and Greg (Shauna) Chavez of Rifle, CO; along with 36 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Eva, parents Daniel and Maria, three brothers Louie, Andy and Danny, one sister Connie, one son Michael, his son-in-law Eddie Lopez, and his granddaughter Jaime Lopez-Guynn.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of Canyonlands Care Center for their exceptional care over the years.
A viewing will be held at Spanish Valley Mortuary on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, from 6 PM to 8 PM. Graveside services will follow in Wellington, Utah, on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at 1 PM.
Nick will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his legacy of love, laughter, and devotion to family will be cherished
