Jonathan Chavez, 41, of Española New Mexico, passed away on February 23, 2026, surrounded, by family. He was born on April 24,1984.
He graduated from Española Valley High School in 2002. He went on to work for the State of New Mexico and was passionate about his faith and coaching basketball. Jonathan was also a personal trainer. Above all, Jonathan will be remembered for his strength, wisdom and compassion. He touched countless lives and leaves behind a legacy of love, faith and devotion.
He was preceded in death by grandparents: Clotario Martinez, Orlinda Martinez, Fermin Chavez & Mary Lou Chavez. Brother: Joshua Chavez.
He is survived by his wife Georgianne Bird-Chavez; children Aria Chavez, Ricardo Vigil, and Kyrie Chavez (mother of Kyrie; Kara Garcia;) parents Pamela Flowers and Mark Chavez; siblings Janaisa Maestas (Daniel Maestas) and Monica Curtis.
A Public Viewing will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at 5:00 p.m., with a Rosary to follow at 6:00 p.m. at the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home in Espanola, NM.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, March 6, 2026, at 11:00 am at San Juan de Bautista Catholic Church in Ohkay Owingeh with a burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
Pallbearers: Daniel Maestas, Ricardo Vigil, Elias Martinez, Elias Martinez Jr., Brandon Martinez and Jason Vigil.
Honorary Pallbearers: Nieces: Taliah Maestas, Markia Maestas, Zakaya Maestas, Angelyn Lynch, Priscilla Gonzales, Kylie Bird and Gracie Bird. Nephews: Kaiden Maestas-Chavez, John Nicholas Bird, Vicente Medina, Joriah Garcia. Goddaughters: Estrella Brito, Elianna Martinez.
