David G. Opfermann

1956 - 2017

David G. Opfermann, 60 of Monroe, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, February 13, 2017.
He was born May 16, 1956 in Monroe to Stanley R. and Joyce M. (Bredernitz) Opfermann. David was a 1974 graduate of Jefferson High School where he served as class president and was the salutatorian. While at Jefferson he played on the golf, baseball, and basketball teams. During high school and college he worked at Raisin River Golf Course, and will be remembered as being a excellent golfer. David was also a avid University of Michigan Fan.
After high school he continued his education at Central Michigan University, where he received a Bachelor in Journalism. Upon graduation he worked as a sportswriter for The Monroe Evening News. For the past 15 years he lived in Des Moines/Ames, Iowa, where he worked as a journalist for the Des Moines Register.
Friends and family will always remember David as a non-materialistic person who loved helping others. A great example of this is the years he hosted a coffee club in Ames, Iowa for university students to gather.
David's family would like to offer the sincerest Thank You to Promedica Hospice and the Monroe Skilled Nursing and Rehab Center.
David is survived by his parents, his sister, Amy R. (Dale) Anderson of Dundee, his brother, Mark R. (Jennifer) Opfermann of Muskegon, and a niece and three nephews. Sadly, his infant sister, Ann preceded him in death.
Friends are invited to call at the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 South Telegraph Road, from 11 AM - 1 PM on Wednesday, February 15. Funeral services will be held that day at 1 PM with Rev. Jennifer Keifer of St. John's Lutheran Church, Dundee officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle.
The family requests that any memorial gifts in his name be given to the Jefferson High School Scholarship Fund.
