Clara Takigawa Obituary

Clara Nobuko Takigawa
February 28, 1917 ~ January 19, 2011

MONTEREY - Born Clara Nobuko Higashi, and known as Nobu to her friends and family, Clara Takigawa passed away peacefully on the morning of January 19, 2011 at the age of 93.
A lifelong resident of Monterey, Nobu grew up working in her parent's restaurant, Azuma Tei, on Franklin Street. She graduated from Monterey High School and was an active member in the Monterey Japanese American Community.
The daughter of Unosuke and Yukiye Higashi, Nobu was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, James Yutaka Takigawa, and her brother Yoshikazu Higashi. Nobu is survived by her brother, Masami Higashi; sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Pamela Takigawa of Carmel Valley and Martin Takigawa and Angela Sinicropi of San Francisco; and sister-in-law, Evelyn Higashi of Carmel.
Though diminutive in stature, she possessed a spirit and personality that was larger than life. A devoted wife, loving parent and loyal friend, Nobu will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at The Paul Mortuary, 390 Lighthouse Avenue, Pacific Grove. Immediately following the service there will be an interment ceremony at the Monterey Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Monterey Peninsula Japanese American Citizens League can be made in Clara Nobuko Takigawa's memory.

Heartfelt condolences to Nobu's family for their loss. I only met Nobu once during a long-ago weekend visit to Monterey with her son Marty and his wife Angela, whose parents were visiting from Iowa. I remember that we all enjoyed a meal together and then went to Nobu's house, where she tirelessly plied us with various desserts. I know her generosity and lively spirit will be missed by all who knew her.

I only met Nobu a few times. I immediately liked her because she was even shorter than my 5'!. She was one of the nicest ladies I have ever met, always with a smile and asking about the family and how they were doing. I know she will be missed by many.

I just have great memories of eating the wonderful leftovers you'd bring home from Nobu!

Tiny body, BIG spirit. Nobu em(wee)bodied the 20th century Cali-Japanese experience. From the Higashi Fishing Company & Azuma-Tei; through the concentration camp; to reinvention: Nobu was there. Brava, Nobu!
