Howard Harris Obituary

Howard Gaylon Harris, 76, of Lynchburg, passed away on Nov. 29, 2016 at his residence. Mr. Harris was born Dec. 11, 1939 in Fayette County, Tenn., near Moscow. The son of Howard Hope Harris and Jessie Parker Surratt Taylor, he had five siblings, James Wayborn (died at age three), Jane, Betty, Ann and Paul. He was educated in Fayette County schools where he excelled in agriculture, academics and student affairs. He graduated from Fayette County High School in 1957 and entered the University of TN College of engineering that same year. The following year he was awarded a work/study scholarship by the university and Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) near Tullahoma. He was selected for membership in Tau Beta Pi and Etta Kappa Nu engineering honor societies and graduated with honors in 1962, receiving a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering. He was employed as an electrical engineer and project manager at AEDC until retirement. In addition, he was the major stock holder and president of H & H Electronics Company, Inc., of Tullahoma for many years. He was a long time member of Lynchburg First Baptist Church where he served as Sunday school teacher and bus driver. Following retirement, he raised cattle on his farm near Lynchburg. He was married first to Carol Veal of Tullahoma and second to Brenda Collins of Manchester. He was the father of three children, Gaylon Lee Harris MD (Elaine) of Columbia; Stacey Harris of Tullahoma; and Kim Collard (Elijah) of Beech Grove. Mr. Harris is survived by nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings are Betty Dacus (Charles) and Paul Harris (Donna), of Fayette County, and Ann German (Kinnie) of Moscow. Special friend Merrily Bishop also survives. Funeral Services were held at the First Baptist Church in Lynchburg on Saturday, Dec. 3. Interment was in the Friendship Cemetery in Moscow, Tenn., on Sunday Dec. 4. For online guest registry please visit <www.lynchburgfuneralhome.com>. Lynchburg Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
