Grant Puskas Obituary

LORAIN – Grant D. Puskas, 54, of Lorain, passed away Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center following a lengthy illness.
Born October 1, 1961 in Amherst, he lived in Lorain his entire life. He graduated from Southview High School in 1980 then served in the US Navy.
Grant worked as a self employed carpenter and also as a carpenter for various contractors in the Lorain area. He also helped at Puskas Family Flowers with various projects and completed digging the pond there with the help of his brothers. The pond is named Grants Lake. He was truly a gifted handyman. He loved his family, friends and freedom "he had to do it his way". He was quick with the wit, had a great heart, a big smile and was a great hugger. We miss him already.
Surviving is his mother, Carol Szabo (nee Guzik) of Elyria; brothers, Greg of Strongsville and George of Avon Lake; sisters Carla Puskas of Sheffield Lake and Celeste Puskas of Lorain; a nephew, Douglas; a niece, Sarah; and long time companion, Brenda Songer of Lorain.
He was preceded in death by his father, George D. Puskas in 1980; and grandparents, Joe and Stella Guzik; and Mari Puskas.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 4:00 - 8:00 pm in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11:00 am in the funeral home. John Slatcoff, deacon of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain, with full military honors. Rest in peace my brother

Grant served on the USS Saipan LHA-2 with me in the Navy. I was there for him when he broke his ankle, visited him in the hospital, and helped him with his physical therapy to get him to mended. He talked me into running 5 miles with him. We used to go sailing together on a 2 man boat. Played golf together.

He missed his Dad and it took a huge toil on him. I was getting ready to touch base with him again and I learned he had passed. One of the nicest guys I have met. He loved his Mom and his family and that was always evident in all his conversations from the Navy forward.

Can't believe he is gone. I will miss him.

I remember Grant as a very friendly person. As a fellow student of his at Whitter Jr. High I found him to be one of the nicest persons ever. God bless his family. My prayers are with you all. I'm living now in South Africa and tried to select a location but it would not allow any listed outside of the U.S.

Grant and his brother were great friends to me. When I had no where to sleep, his brother let me sleep in his room in the garage. It was just for a night and in the morning I had to jump out of the window when someone came into the garage. But that I got to do it spoke of his and his brother's character. The last time I remember seeing him was at a graduation party at the flower shop in 1980. Two girls got into it in the drive way. Thank you dear friend. Love...

I'm sorry for your loss. My prayers are with you. I'm saddened to see Grant has lost his fight but now with God he has won his war. He was a great guy who would do anything for you even if it caused him grief. You would never know the grief or his struggle but you would see his smile and sincere gladness to have helped you. My parents Vern and Jane Vanderpool, my brothers Butch and Todd and my family are all saddened in Grants passing and hope God sends your family strength. You have always been there for the community, all of your family and I appreciate and thank you all for that. Our deepest sympathy for your loss.

No matter what Grant was struggling with himself he had a smile for you that said Enjoy Life and that he was there for you if you needed him! 4/20/15
