We are saddened to learn about "Uncle Pete" passing. He was a great neighbor and friend to Ed & Rose Marks - living just across the lane. So many great memories!
Pate & my dad, Ed, loved going to Dairy Queen for ice cream. My dad built the portable boxing rings for the Golden Gloves. "Uncle Pete" was my confirmation sponsor. I ran through the altar boy's tunnel at St. Mary's to leave church, turned around, expecting to have "Uncle Pete" following me. I'll never forget him crawling through that
tunnel after me - it was NOT designed for a guy as tall as he was!
Playing baseball in the De Santis back yard - I sucked at playing basball but he had patience - hit the ball & it smacked him in the chest & knocked the wind out of him. I ran to first - Pete was down on one knee. I ran to second -he was down on both knees. I ran to third - he was on the ground! I ran home & directly across the street to hide in my folks' garage. I was sure I was in BIG trouble! LOL
I'll never forget "Uncle Pete" coming to my dad's funeral in 2008. It took a great deal of effort for him to do do. We were able to visit with "Uncle Pete" a few days later - unfortunately it was for the last time.
We'll miss you "Uncle Pete"
Love

Pete De Santis was a part of why my childhood in Lorain was wonderful, with nothing more than a free bag of chips, and a smile; he will be missed.

Thank you so much for your kind words. I am so glad for the recollection. He was a wonderful Dad and I am particularly proud of him now knowing that he was so kind to so many. Bless you and your family as well.

I can not believe Pete is gone. God rest him. As we started our business years ago, Pete always stopped in, Chips in hand, offering us sage advise. He knew I was pregant and would stop in and offer to take me to lunch worried I was working to hard. I still have the card from the flowers he sent in my son's baby book. He would always talk about his beloved wife. A kinder more concerned man never lived. With his passing the world is a lesser place. He was an example of how a kind word or action can touch a life forever.

My condolences to the De Santis Family.
I am grateful that Pete took the time to train me as a golden gloves boxer. I learned how to be nice, tough and humble. It was a great lesson for a young man who needed some guidance, discipline and a role model. I will never forget Pete. Thank you!

God saw you were getting tired,
And a cure was not to be,
So he put his arms around you
And whispered, "Come to me"
With tearful eyes we watched you,
...And saw you pass away,
Although we loved you dearly,
We could not make you stay.
A golden heart stopped beating,
Hard working hands at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us,
He only takes the best.

Jean Marie,
I am sorry for your loss; your father was a good man. I met him several times, and you I believe once, when I was married to Alan Porkolab and at the funeral of Jean Porkolab.
Pete was a good friend of my in-laws and ex-husband; I will remember him fondly. He was so outgoing and funny. I will never forget at our wedding he told a funny story about his trip to Rome.
It's always difficult to lose a parent; you and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Echoing all the previous comments regarding Mr. DeSantis. Good memories of growing up on Wallace Lane with his family at the end of the street. They were so generous with the neighborhood kids, allowing us to swim in their pool on those hot summer days. I remember the DeSantis family hosting neighborhood pool parties that were so much fun. And of course Mr. DeSantis’s Frito Lay delivery truck driving down our street; it was more popular and welcomed than the local ice cream truck, as Mr. DeSantis would generously stop and hand out snacks to us. I even recall an opportunity to ride with him and others in one of his delivery trucks as a kid.
Always helping people, he employed my brother and another neighbor at his warehouse when they were young, and sponsored a very talented hot stove baseball team (Lays Chips) that my brother played on.
I had an opportunity to visit with Mr. DeSantis a couple years ago when searching for a place for our Dad to live. I hadn’t seen him in years. But as mentioned by someone earlier, Mr. DeSantis was still sharp as a tack, greeting me with an enthusiastic “Hello Tommy’ as if no time had passed.
My sympathies and prayers go out to the family. Another of a great generation has passed.

Jean (and family): I still vividly remember the first time I met your beloved Peter. I was in the early 1960's and I was at my grandmother's side at the store at 1903 Washington Ave. Peter arrived with truck and the store's weekly order. He looked at me and told my grandmother that he couldn't unload the chips until I inspected and taste tested the first bag. I ran to the back of the store where Peter was waiting with a bag of chips in hand and waiting for my approval to unload the delivery. From that day on until I started school, I looked through the upstairs window above the store for Peter's truck to race down to meet him and give him the "approval" to unload. He always took the time to talk to me. He was a statuesque figure, tall and muscular, with a magical smile. Years later, on the first Tee at Thunderbird Hills golf course he reminded me of those days at the store and gently teased me. Of course, out of his golf bag came bags of chips for my friends and I. Peter represents what we are so missing today. Extended families and traditional values; charitably giving to those who we don't even know; Civic involvement. I will always cherish my memories of Peter. May g-d grant you comfort along with all mourners in this world and may Peter's soul enjoy great comfort and bliss as he looks down from heaven at the generations of those who he has taught and influenced.

The world is truly a lesser place without Pete in it...I had the extreme pleasure of working for Pete until his retirement. I can honestly say (sadly) they just don't make them like him anymore. He conducted himself with class, INTEGRITY, and most importantly, always a smile..he made his employees feel like family, as opposed to the help. If I have any regrets in life one is that I didn't get to work longer for him...He did things the right way. He always greeted you with a smile, a pat on the back, a handshake. I'll miss the Easter Hams, the Thanksgiving Turkeys...but most importantly, I'll miss the man. God rest you Pete...you are missed.

I fondly remember spending time at the DeSantis home as a youth, as a frequent guest of their granddaughter. Both Mr. and Mrs. DeSantis were kind, generous souls who always went out of their way to make you feel welcomed. To this day, I have never experienced more delicious italian food than Mrs. DeSantis's Sunday dinners! Prayers to the entire family.

Diana (Shulsky) Though I did not know your Uncle Pete I know that the pain of loss can be overwhelming. I pray that during those times you will find comfort in your family and friends and the laughter that will arise from shared stories of your Uncle Pete and how he made even the seemingly trivial times a time for celebration and joy.

A rose once grew
where all could see,
sheltered beside
a garden wall,
And as the days passed
swiftly by,
it spread its branches, straight and tall...
One day, a beam of light
shone through
a crevice that had
opened wide ~
The rose bent gently
toward its warmth
then passed beyond
to the other side
Now, you who deeply
feel its loss,
be comforted ~ the rose blooms there ~
its beauty even greater now,
nurtured by
God's own loving care.
I love you Pete
