Richard Pallucca Obituary

Richard "Dick" Pallucca, 74, of Frontenac, passed away at 4:55 p.m. Thursday, October 24, 2013, at the Galichia Heart Hospital in Wichita, KS.

Dick was born April 28, 1939 at Mount Carmel Hospital in Pittsburg, the son of Joe "Pepi" and Olga (Tavella) Pallucca. He attended Frontenac schools and graduated from Frontenac High School in1957. He served on active duty in the United States Army as a Military Policeman at Fort Benning, GA., in 1960-1961 and then in the Army Reserves.

When Dick was growing up he worked for his father and grandfather Attilio at the family grocery store. In 1909, Attilio Pallucca entered into a partnership with Enrico Moriconi starting a small grocery store on Cherokee Street in Frontenac. In 1930, the business moved to its current location on East McKay Street, and three years later Attilio bought Moriconiís share. It's been in the Pallucca family ever since. When Attilio retired he sold the business to Joe, Dick's father, and Raymond Pallucca, Dick's uncle. In 1959, hard-working Joe died of a heart attack. At age 20, Dick had to jump in and learn the ropes, including how to properly cut meat, himself. He served as co-owner with Raymond until Raymond's death in 1992, making Dick the full owner. In 2009 at the age of 69, Dick re-modeled the store and changed it from a full-service grocery store to a deli offering a variety of meats, hot foods and catering.

Membership was held in the John F. Derby Post #43 American Legion at Frontenac.

Survivors include two sons, Joe Pallucca and his wife Susan of Overland Park, KS, and Bill Pallucca and his partner Kevin Deen of Kansas City, MO; a daughter, Becky Pallucca Leftwich and her husband Tommy of Pittsburg, KS; and his former wife of 22 years Rosemary Dock, also of Pittsburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday (October 29) at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac, with Father Thomas Stroot as Celebrant. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery, where the John F. Derby American Legion Post #43 of Frontenac will provide flag folding ceremony. The family will receive friends on Monday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home, where friends may call after 12 p.m. Monday. The family suggests memorials to the Frontenac Education Association. These may be left at or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 East 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762. I did not know Dick but I would like to extend my sympathy to the family. I learned of Dick by reading about Frontenac. I am an Army veteran as is he and I as well served at Ft.Benning,Ga. I would like to thank Dick for his service to our country. I can appreciate his long hours over many years and his dedication to work as well as family. I likewise have a family background that immigrated from Italy and settled in Illinois. I was self employed and ran a business for over 20 years in Lockport,Il. We also had a butcher in the family who had his own shop. I now work for the VA and transport disabled veterans. If there is any way we could honor your father with a plaque or a statue in Frontenac or something at your local parish please contact me. Sincerely, Daniel J. Dick was a kind, compassionate man who was friendly to everybody and helped a lot of people during his lifetime. I don't think he ever turned away anyone that came to him in need of groceries regardless of their ability to pay. He will be missed by many.

After our marriage ended, we still remained friends and kept in touch over the years. He will always hold a special place in my heart. Joey, Bill & Becky, my prayers go with you.

I am going to miss him. My son just thinks the world of Dick. When we are in the area we always stop by and sit and talk with him in his office. And he would send home with us his famous ham salad, sausage, and brick cheese. We always ordered from him for our Christmas dinner. My son would work for him sometimes in the summer. Dick would say "I sent him on errands and he didn't even know or ask where the places i needed him to go were and he would be back in no time. He would say he's a smart kid". We always had good holidays when we visited our mom. He liked Jim alot too. Dick was very kind and always in good humor. He always had good stories about his children.
We will miss him alot.
