Richard Stovall Obituary

Beloved husband, dad, granddad, and so proud to be a great granddaddy, Richard Stovall was called home to his Lord and Savior, April 20, 2012. Richard was born on November 13, 1934, in Ft. Worth, to Rev. J.W. and Velma Stovall. Richard accepted the Lord at age 8 and never wavered. He spent the last 59 years serving at South Memorial Baptist Church, where his father pastored for over 42 years. Richard spent over four years helping rebuild the church after it burned in the late '80's. He lived and talked his faith. Richard is survived by his wife of 57 years, Winn, that he always referred to as his "Gift from God"; his daughter, Wendi Tully and husband, Mike of Midland; son, Burt Stovall and Eileen Bucayan of Round Rock. Grandchildren include: Michael Tully and wife, Jessica of Midland, Matthew Tully and Timothy Stovall of Midland, Hilary Stovall at Texas Tech, and Cliff Hicks from Round Rock. Great grandchildren include: Caden and Rylee Tully from Midland. Richard is also survived by brother, Jim Stovall and wife, Beverly of Huntsville, Alabama; sister, Vernenice Anderson and husband, Bill of Hurst; and brother, Bob and wife, Jackie of Midland; and by many very special nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a diving family of thousands that have helped spread his vision throughout the world. Richard was a member of the coffee group that meets each morning at the Bradford Inn. Thanks Guys! Richard graduated from Wink High School and was master of many things. He owned Stovall 's Scuba and Travel, which opened in 1960, and was the first scuba center in West Texas. He built his first re-breather in 1954 and was a self taught diver until 1959, when he became a better, safer diver. He had a passion for teaching people to become comfortable divers and enjoy the fancy and real artwork that God has provided in his underwater world. All of his children and grand children are trained divers, and in his 58 plus years of diving, he never had an accident, nor did his students. Richard was a solid supporter of Midland business, owning Stovall's Garage, then Stovall's Imports until 1986, then continued on with his love of scuba. In addition to all this, he held a commercial, multi-engine pilot's license and was certified as a trainer for so many things. He was a proud veteran of the 11th Airborne, US Army. Richard always loved to discuss religion and politics and would respect your belief and opinions, but he did expect you to do the same. The family would like to give special thanks to the Concho County Sheriff's Department, the Texas Department of Public Safety, Eden EMS and Brady Fire Department, the Concho County J.P., Scott Spoonts and Global Diving and Salvage of Houston. You have all become a part of our family during this difficult time. Funeral services will be led by Pete Campbell, at South Memorial Baptist Church, at 2:00 p.m., Friday , April 27, 2012, at 1700 West Carter, Midland 79701. After graveside services at Fairview Cemetary, the family will be receiving guests for a meal at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, at 3309 W. Neely. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home of Midland. Condolences may be made at: www.ellisfuneral.com. If you choose, in lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to South Memorial Baptist Church in care of Ellis Funeral Home.

Winn, Wendy and Burt,
This message is from Vada Mougin's daughter, Aleda. I work for a diving group in Houston and this morning an announcement was made about Richard. It is such a small world. I could write a book on my years on growing up in Midland, South Memorial Baptist Church and the entire Stovall family. I am so sorry to hear about Richard. May the Lord bless all of you and you can rest assurd that we will all be breathing cestial air someday. My Mother and Dad, Russell and Vada and my Son, Russell have greeted Richard at the pearly gates and are showing him the crystal blue water that he will be diving in forever. With Love, Aleda

I know Burt and Hilary. I just took a journey down your photo memory lane and it was beautiful. I didn't know Richard but I feel that gave me some great idea to the warm loving man he was in your lives. I'm very sorry for your loss. May God help you through this hard time.

Mr. Stovall was so kind and caring when he helped look for my missing brother-in-law in a pond. My son took scuba lessons from him and we had such a wonderful time. He will be missed by many.

At the age of 17 I lost my own father while high school friends with Wendi Stovall, now Wendi Tully. Mr. Stovall was always such a kind, strong father figure to his family, it made me miss my own father even more. I always appreciated the strong love he had for Wendi and Burt, and the devotion for Winn. I would encourage all of you o celebrate the many years you had Richard and try not to focus on the one day you had him no longer for he truly left a legacy of love you can all be so proud of. Lifting you in my prayers, LouAnn McBroom Potter

To the Stovall family,
I remember going to the dive shop with my dad as a little girl and how much my brother and I looked forward to getting to see Richard and play in the shop. Also, I'm never going to forget being teased about turning purple because I was so cold, not matter how warm it was outside, when we would go with the dive group to Balmorhea State Park.I can remember going on these trips until we were old enough to learn how to dive and I remember that when we would beg Richard, my dad, and Burt to teach us to dive they all promised that when we were old enough they would teach us. Then when we finally were old enough we learned how to dive and we got to go to Roatan. Also, I'm never going to forget how much Richard and Winn wanted to make it to my wedding 7 years ago but they couldn't make it because of the dive trip. I have so many memories from growing up around Richard and Winn and I am so sorry for the loss of such a wonderful man that made such a wonderful impression in my life. He will be dearly missed by all that knew him and loved him!! I thoughts are with you today as you lay him to rest.

It was such fun to stop by and talk to Richard when we were still in Midland, I would stop by for a few minutes and end up being there for an hour or more, he will be truly missed. My condolences to the family on your loss.

I came to know and love this wonderful man by way of his wonderful wife and my very dear friend Winn. He was one of the sweetest men I ever had the privilege to know. Most of my memories of him are from the last few years but they are great memories. I really enjoyed when Richard and Winn came to a Halloween party this past year thrown by my friend Tina and I. Winn is always so clever with costumes and dressed Richard as a "Buccaneer" and had him wear dollar bills from his ears so he was then a "Buck an ear".Winn and Wendi, I share in your sorrow and know it will be so hard for a long time for your special family. Always know I will be there for you. Love, Keni

A few weeks ago we were at the PADI Forum in Dallas talking about the time we taught diving together and getting together in Roatan this summer. Now I'm still in shock wondering why our LORD called my friend but finding some comfort in knowing that we are all a part of HIS plan even though we don't always understand it. Winn, Bart and Wendy our thoughts and prayers are with you. The diving community has lost one of the best. God Bless. Dave & Sally Wheeler

My memories of Richard are more than 50 years old--those of a teenage girl at South Memorial. Singing in the choir (behind his dad) or playing the piano (opposite his mother) or going on youth outings with Richard and Winn as our "chaperones." He will always have a special place in my heart.

Rick was my next door neighbor and what a great neighbor he was. He was always willing to help us out in any way he could on whatever project we had going. He also loved our animals. Can't tell you how many chats we had together across the fence....talk'n politics or about what new piece of equipment one us had gotten for our tractors. He will be sorely missed by the Brackens.

April 26, 2012

For over 25 years Richard and Winn were our Lee High School football game next-seat neighbors, and we loved getting to know Richard. Our paths always seemed to cross with the Stovalls in several different walks of life. Richard talked to us about his many, many life experiences and about his love for God and his wife Winn. It was obvious! One of my favorite things was that at the Odessa High/Lee High games every year, Richard and I would yell (sometimes secretly) for our former team. Richard, I will miss our Broncho cheers but we will mostly miss your constant smile!

From the Wiley and Christine Rambo family, Carol and Eddie Freeman, Ronnie and Gayle Rambo and all of our families, we will always remember the Stovall's, lifetime friends and family of our Lord. Richard has many starsin his crown so many they can't listed here, I remember his beautiful bass voice and so look forward to joining him in the bass section God has for us in Heaven. Richard taught me to dive in 1974 when I was a teenager growing up in Midland. He was an outstanding role model, patient and encouraging to all of his students. Please accept my condolences to his family.

April 26, 2012

Richard and I became very good friends through diving. I will never have his vast knowledge and experience in scuba or life, but I learned so much in our time together. He was a great man with so much to offer. I am proud to say that he was a very special friend and mentor. God bless you Richard, Winn and the rest of the Stovall family.

Richard was a super testimony to the Christian faith. That smile of his would bring the sunshine to the underwater world. He was a joy to know and our memories will be sweeter because of his prescense in our lives. Richard meant so much to our family. He was a great friend of our daddy, and he and Winn continued to be so supportive of my mother after my dad passed away... Wendi and Burt... we know your pain and I pray that the Lord give you comfort and peace... Knowing that your daddy has received his reward... That on the day that he passed, the Lord was there to welcome him home... "Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness! “, Matthew 25:21... We love you guys so much... and we'll be here to help support your mom... May God Bless you Always...

I am sad to say I didn't know Richard personally, but by being friends with his lovely wife and great daughter, I can tell what kind of man he was. All the stories that I've heard; all the love that is shared in conversation about Richard is overwhelmingly inspirational for the insight to have for memories of this man. We are heartbroken for your family's loss. May he rest in peace, always. Love Bob and Mercy Walker

Bobby and I were introduced by Richard and family in 1988 while both of us were taking scuba lessons. Richard's dad married us four years later and they had a wonderful reception for us at their house. We will never forget the "decorated" bullfrogs. Richard, Winn, Wendi and Burt became our extended family. We referred to Richard as our Midland Dad. We are heartbroken for this wonderful family's loss and for ours.

Richard's dive family had the opportunity to enter another world through his guidance and training. We will all miss Richard a great deal but what a legacy he leaves behind. As happens so many times - we reconnect with people through sad times. That is happening right now. Richard would be so pleased.

Richard was a man of unwavering faith. It makes it easier to know that he is with God.

We will miss his sense of humor, his attitude of serving others and his friendship. Roatan will never be the same without Richard guiding the trip.

Our utmost sympathy and respect goes to the family during this difficult time. We are there for you in anything that you need.

Love,
Bobby and Elaine

To the Stovall family I want to tell you how sorry we are about Richard. I know you will miss him so bad and I am sad for that. I do not have to tell you but I will how much he loved you all. Winn you and he had a wonderful marriage and you always kept it so fresh and young between you.We meet Richard when our daugter Ashley wanted to dive for her 12th birthday. Richard over those next few years taught all 5(Guy, Renee, Luke, Ashley & Shanon) of us to dive which was 16 years ago. We have been to AKR several times with him and all of my childern are excellent divers and two of them went professional, the other a Dive Master. The first time we went to AKR I was frighten to dive and told Richard I think I will just go to Dolphin Camp with my 10 yr. old he took my hand and said no you are not and he dove with me held my hand at first and that was it for me it was gorgeous and I had accomphished something I thought I could never do. We had lunch with Richard almost every Wednesday for 10 years the last 6 years we only kept up by e-mails. Because of our families love of the sea Richard will always have a place in our hearts and memories of those times we dove together. It is true that Richard was very understanding in listening to everyones beliefs. He was always kind to his friends that were in need or ill. He had energy I could never believe and I admired him, he was so happy. What a man. My prayers are with you all. Renee Richards

Richard taught me to dive in 1970 at the YMCA in Odessa. It was obvious that his Christian beliefs guided him. Learning was a valuable experience for me not only in diving but in lessons in team building and having confidence in your "diving buddy".

My thoughts, prayers and love go out to the entire family...Richard has always been such an inspiration through his faith, diving, work ethics, and his unfailing demonstration of love for his family. Even after all these years, I still see that gentle giant's big smile, confident and calm manner...with the biggest arms I've ever seen in my life! I enjoyed the classes and dives made with Richard here...and look forward to diving with him in the waters of heaven.
