Archie Knapp Obituary

Archie LeRoy Knapp, 86, died Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 26, 2006, with his family by his side.

He was born on the family farm outside Winnett on July 17, 1920, to Harry and Johannah (Deethardt) Knapp. He graduated high school in Power, then attended electrician's trade school in Chicago.

He served his country in the Army during World War II in the Pacific.

Archie was employed as a supervisor for Mountain Bell. He retired in 1985. During his employment he never missed a day of work due to illness.

Archie enjoyed traveling in his RV with his wife Judith all around the United States and Canada. They especially enjoyed Flathead Lake and Lake McDonald. He was very devoted to his family. He liked to take walks around the neighborhood and visit with his neighbors. Archie was always described by others as a gentle giant. He was a very kind, honest and loving man who was always there for his family. People always commented on his beautiful blue eyes that would sparkle when he was happy. He was a member of the Butte Pioneers Club and South Butte Kiwanis.

He married Judith Abel in Lewistown in St. Leo's Church on June 1, 1957. They lived in Cut Bank and Havre before moving to Butte in 1960. She preceded him in death in 2004. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his sister Vera Durnstine, and his brothers, Howard Knapp and Ray Knapp.

He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Johannah and Thomas Kinman, Butte, and Maureen and Tim Wright, Benicia, Calif.; son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Lori Knapp, Clinton; granddaughters, Hannah and Heather Wright; and sisters and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Jack Pearson, Everett, Wash., and Irma LaNore, Olympia, Wash.

To the family of Archie Knapp,
I will always remember Archie and his gentle, kind, paternal manner. He was my father's supervisor for many years...in Cut Bank and Havre. Last year I got to talk to my father at length about our life traveling with the "phone company" in the 50's (my memories of that time are sketchy), and he said Archie was a good friend, and a good boss when we returned to Butte. I'm sure both Archie and my Dad are looking after us all now, as they did for all those years.

God went fishing last month, and caught a couple of keepers in our fathers.

To Archie's family and friends,
Please accept my sincere sympathy in the loss of Archie.
I was the first woman to ever work in his department at US West. He was always kind and helpful. I will never forget that and will remember him with great admiration.

To the Family,
On behalf of the Montana District of Kiwanis, please accept our sympathy. We have fond memories of all the work that he did for the childen of Butte. His work at Sheeps Head Camp Ground is a real and long lasting memorial to the people of Montana that use it. He and his fellow members, can be very proud of the (Presidential Point of Light Award) that they recieved. It is a great achievement. He will be missed.
