Hello Sherry, I was watching dateline, and saw you, at first glance, I watched because you stuck me as being a very beautiful woman, then I listened to the story, im so sorry for your loss, I know it's been a while, my wife passed away this March, I know it's nothing compared to what you are going through, just wanted to reach out, Todd, from Boston Ma.

I don't know why I've never written before. I never had the privilege of knowing Law Risken in life, but I was most certainly affected by his passing.
I was the teacher who took over as an interim until a credentialed special ed teacher could be found. I was there for nearly two weeks. It was profound to sit in his chair and experience his life through his students.
Mr. Risken, through your tragedy I was able to grow as a teacher, to become a better teacher. After that experience, in which your students behaved remarkably well considering the circumstances, every scrappy, gum chewing talker in any class was responded to with calm and considerate but direct instruction, rather than shouting and impatience. Because no matter what happened, it was less than the trial by fire this tragedy was.
My much belated condolences to Law's family, friends, former students, and all those he touched in life.

I wanted Law's family to know that despite the continuing chaos in the South Bay, his students are carrying on. Many are graduating in June and will do it "for Mr. Risken" because that is what he would want. They have been told about your generous gift to the Risken Scholarship Fund and all are hoping to win this year's award. I am praying for you at this time.

Hey Larry,
It's a new year and hopefully we will have some answers soon. It was exactly one year ago today that I picked you up at the airport. Dad, Jerry, Lee and I were so excited to see you. I had such a great time when you were here. I especially enjoyed listening to you talk about your "new program". That new program was to include spending more time together. You were so at ease with your decision to move in a different direction with your life. I am so sorry that opportunity was taken from you.
I wish I could hear your goofy laugh one more time. I love you so much.

want you to know, I did give thanks

said a prayer, that many of your

God may indeed answer "Yes." Both

Law, Sherry, and Jerry,
I am sorry it took so long to write in Larry's book. I just was overwhelmed and even though we hadn't had much contact in the last 15 years, I loved him tons. He was such a fun-loving guy and a total blast to be around. He made me and everyone laugh so very much and he had such a unique personality. I have lots of great memories and imagine y'all have so many hilarious and special memories and I am so glad....because that's what carries you through. It is evident that Larry made such an impact on so very many and was a hero to his students...what a legacy! God Bless you Larry!

The Memorial Service was an incredible way to start the Memorial Holiday weekend. It was wonderful to meet Mr. Risken's family. Law taught me much about unconditional love. The article in the Daily Breeze on Saturday was great as it showed what the students were trying to do--celebrate the life of their dear friend.

Having read the guest book, I am struck by the powerful words in Larry's honor. How proud you all must be of him, his contribution to his careers, both in the Navy and as a teacher - & a son and brother.
God Bless you all! Much love, Emilie

To the Risken family and Law's students:
I never had the pleasure of meeting or knowing Mr. Risken. Thus I cannot reach back into any memories like other postings. I was a substitute teacher who took his class for almost two weeks after. In that brief time I was with his students there were many difficulties, but also rewarding moments. I could see in the love for him his students had that he was a great teacher and an inspiring role model.
Sadly, for reasons that cannot be mentioned here but a few know I was unable to attend the recent memorial ceremony at Lawndale High, although I did catch the tail end of the reception and had the honor of meeting Mr. Risken, Sr. I do not know what Law's faith background was, but in keeping with my own the day before the memorial two candles were lit at a local church, one for Law's students and one for him, and much prayer was said for him. I feel it important for any student as well as family member reading this to know that.
Those candles will burn for perhaps about a week, but if half of what I heard about Mr. Risken is true, I am sure that the light that came from his life will burn forever. He lives on in his family, his friends, and his students, and even in strangers like myself who have been inspired. He is undoubtedly looking down from a better place, smiling with love for his family and students and being with them and protecting them always.

Dear Risken Family,
I'm am sorry for the tragic loss of Mr. Risken. I am still in shock with the events that have taken place.
I served with Mr. Risken on board the U.S.S. Antietam, he was my DCA (damage control assistant) as well as a friend. I will never forget WestPac '94 and the way he would ask if I had toilet paper for sale and if I was going to make him pay $5 a roll, considering that he was my boss. He would also get after me for having my surfboards and numerous pieces of equipment scattered throughout the division.
Mr. Risken was a man whose opinion I valued as well as respected. There are two things that are vivid memories I have of him. One, that he is a man of his word and his boy-like smile.
I hope that one day Mr. Risken will return home, to rest with his Mom and Brother. I pray that there is a resolution with this matter, so that one day there won't be as much heartache and pain for your family.
With Deepest Sympathy

To the Riskens and all of Larry's loved ones. I offer my truest condolences. Sherry, as you know I grew up with Larry all through high school and Larry was the funniest, kindest, easy going guy of all. Every memory I can recall with Larry always involved laughter and good times. It was just his nature. His "fro" was always bigger than mine, and I was the black guy. His laugh was the best and his true friendship will always be part of my wonderful memories of Timberline and the Crew. After reading Mary and Jay's entry I was a part of the camping trip. I remember hiking into the woods with supplies and fishing poles and some how along the way we lost some poles, but we did save the beer =c}
I knew that Larry had gone into the Service and it sounds as if he excelled in that as well.I did not know that Larry was a teacher, but I have no doubt he excelled in that part of his life too. Larry you will be truly missed my friend.
I know you are in a great place that goes without saying. God bless you and know that you are missed by so many. Peace and Blessings to Larry's family and friends.

Living in New York, we are reminded of a concept from the musical "Rent." One of the characters asks how to measure a life. Rather than in days, minutes, hours or years, he suggests measuring it in LOVE. We are so touched reading all the wonderful things about cousin Larry that we cannot help but measure his life by his LOVE and the LOVE we all had for him. Larry had a very rich life and we were blessed to have him with us though his years here were far too short. We pray he is happy with family enjoying everlasting life and pray that those grieving will find comfort in the LOVE that surrounds them. Best wishes from cousins Kathryn, Ann Margaret and Michelle and Aunt Trudy

I can't even find the words to express my sympathy to you. Not a day goes by that Larry is not in my thoughts and prayers. It's been weeks since we received the phone call and I'm still shocked and so saddened by it all. I was so fortunate to see and visit with Larry at my dad's funderal. The sympathy he showed, the words of encouragement, and memories he shared with us of our dad were so inspiring to my brothers and sisters. He will forever be in our hearts as a very special cousin. Know that he is in a good, safe place with family and time will heal the pain we are all feeling right now for him. Love and miss you all!

Law, Sherry, Jerry & family,
Our hearts pour out to all of
you, we are so very sorry.
I've thought about Larry so
much these past days, his quick
witt and humor were priceless,
there's only a few people that
could make me laugh like he could.
I got out my old annuals and Larry
filled pages with all the funny
stuff we'd done, I read it and
laughed and cried. Jay told me
a story when he and Lare tormented
eachother all night, they were all
camping outside by a river,Larry
Jay, Mike, Brunner & Riedel
Jay kept putting sand and rocks
in Larrys sleeping bag, all the
nonsense stuff that guys do,
anyhow, Larry finally got Jay
good, he put crawdads in his
sleeping bag and in his hair
when Jay woke up in the morning
he jumped out of his skin, they
were all over him, and Lare howled
tell he fell over, then Jay started
laughing because of hard Lare was
laughing...Thank you Larry for
the years we got to know you,
the world was a better place for
having you in it, Thank you
you for serving this country, and
thank you for being a teacher, you were very respected by all your students.
STAND PROUD AND TALL FOREVER
WE SALUTE YOU.

Larry was like a brother, his sister Sherry my best friend. Jean, his mother, and Law his father, were like my parents. Brothers Jerry and Sean were so much like my brothers as well.
We fought, shared, played and laughed a lot! It's hard to believe Larry and Sean are gone...but not from my heart or memory... I won't forget Larry's smirk, that fro, playing football, capture the flag, the contagious laugh, or his trusting heart, ok... and that shoe he threw at me when were fighting like siblings would. Most of all I won't forget how happy/liberated Larry was on his last visit to WA. I am so glad we had that time...

It has been over twenty years since I saw Larry but the memories I have of him are forever etched in my mind. My most heart felt wishes go out to you and your family. I saw the Law's picture on the front page of the paper Saturday morning and my first thought was, "What great thing did Riskin do now?" He always wore a smile and had skip in his step walking around campus. I can still hear him laughing as he talked. He found out my dad had been in the military and always addressed me by my last name. I had lots of his students in my art classes and he would stop by 2-3 times a week to check on their progress. He would start the lessons with the kids, leaving my room by saying, "I'll leave the drawing to the smart kids." That's just who he was, leaving the kids believing in themselves and feeling good. We would conspire to get his students into art classes and have them succeed. Ironically, he stopped by my room the last day of school before break. He genuinely cared about the kids, the faculty and the school. I can't believe he's gone. I can hear him talking to me and to quote him, "Ah D'Agostino, it's gonna be alright." "I hear you Riskin but for now I will miss you."

Mr. Risken was a blessing in the lives of everyone who knew him.He will be remembered as a great teacher, one who really cared for his students. My daughter Julia has many wonderful memories of him and I will always be grateful for the way he helped her deal with her father's death in 2005. I have taught my kids that every time we think of someone who has passed, those thoughts go straight to heaven and surround that person's soul with a most profound love. I know that Mr.Risken will be experiencing this for all eternity. Julia remembers meeting Mr. Risken Sr. and Jerry when they came to the classroom. We want to express our sincere condolences to them as well as his sister Sherry. To Law Sherry and Jerry, We are saddened to hear of Larry's untimely death. It seems like such a short time ago when our boys were riding dirt bikes on the lot between our houses in Ridgemont. I've had the pleasure of working with Law over the past year and will be forever grateful for the smile he greeted his students and colleagues with each and every day. Sher Bear..You know how sorry I am about Larry, I am still shocked and saddened by it all! I will hang onto our fun memories of us traveling to California and staying with him a few times, and also him inviting us for lunch on his ship in Long Beach where everyone had to salute him! You would tease him about it and I would giggle! What an honor to have been in his company! Law,Sher and Jerry..Larry is a son,and brother you should be very proud of! Love to you all,Cindy

Dear Risken Family,
Law Risken was a great man and a great teacher. He helped me so much, he made me become a good student and inspired me to go to college and play football. He also watched me in all of my football games and cheered for me! I was really happy! Mr. Risken helped a lot of students with problems. He helped me through out the years the even let me start up his Harley Davidson Motorcycle that he called "Betsy" we had some great times together. He was a real inspiration to the students and me. He inspired my friends and the students. He inspired my friend, Josh Molineros to go to the navy and to be an enginer. I was thinking about going to the navy and playing footbal, I received a football letter form the united states navel academy. I'm very truly sorry for your loss, I know you will miss him because I will miss him too! He was like a second father to me. He gave me so much advice; I thank him for everything he’s given me.
Sincerely.

Dear Mr.Risken,
You were the first teacher that I met when I first started to go to Lawndale High. You helped me in many different ways that no one else could imagine. If I had a wish, I would tell you all the good things that you have done for me. You motivated me to do my best in school and be all that I can be. You taught me to never settle for less, always go for what is greater. You told me that no one remembers second place, they always remember the person who came in first place. Well all that I really can say is that I will really miss you and I know that you are in a better place. R I P MR. RISKEN....

He will obviously continue to live in the hearts and minds of those he touched. I hope you will be sustained by the fond memories you have of Law, and by these powerful testimonies of the impact his life made.

I am extremely heartbroken that I did not get the time to know Law as well as the rest of the folks here in this guest book. We were just beginning our journey. Law's last e-mail to me dated April 17 at 18:44:36 in closing says "Don't forget about me." Reading through these guest book entries, I believe his request will be honored. We will not forget about him. Our memories will grow fonder. His family probably feels an enormous void, and my heartfelt condolences go out to them. I was looking forward to becomming a part of Law's personal life and friendship circle. May his soul rest in peace...somewhere in the Pacific Northwest near a body of water that he loved so dearly. My sympathies are with his family.

Law, Jerry, Sherry and Lee,
What a terible loss. Since I was a young child I have admired the spirit of both fun and of love that your family shares . Through good times and through loss, this spirit has not faltered and is a true testament to who your family is. You are in my prayers.

Mr Riskin, everyone in school will miss you. No matter what goes on there will always be a thought of Mr Riskin in everyone’s heart and mind. I still remember him chewing on his gum. He talked to me about his experiences in the war and we shared a love of history.

Mr Risken was a dedicated man. He helped me when I needed help. When I had a difficult time in my life he was there for me. Mr Riskin told me that if you try you’ll succeed. He was devoted to his job and his students. He was open talking about how he loved his students.
