DILLON - Richard "Rick" Anthony Cadieux, 63, of Dillon died Friday, April 14, 2006, in St. James Healthcare in Butte.
He was born on June 15, 1942, in Anaconda, to Leonard and Rose Cadieux.
Rick spent his early years in Anaconda and attended Anaconda Central. His love for sports and his athletic abilities led him to letter four years in football and two in baseball. His drive and determination, along with a football scholarship, led him to Western Montana College, where he pursued a degree in secondary education. While at Western, Rick's talent for playing football earned him a running back position for four years; which included playing in three conference championships.
Following his graduation in 1964, Rick began his teaching career in Plentywood, where he was offered a position for $100 a week teaching English and coaching football and track. Due to the war in Vietnam, he returned to Anaconda a year later to join the Army National Guard. He was then assigned to the Presidio in San Francisco, where he taught journalism to soldiers bound for Vietnam as soldier journalists. Following his release, he taught for the next several years in rural communities that included Jordan, Power and Prairie City, Ore.
In 1972, Beaverhead County High School offered him a position as an English teacher and assistant football and basketball coach. After two years, he became the head football coach, where he led his team to three conference titles in 1976, 1978 and 1980. In 1983, he gave up his position, but continued being involved with athletics by coaching basketball, wrestling, and track throughout his 32 years at Beaverhead County High School. Additionally, he coached speech and drama, taught journalism, advised the high school paper and directed school plays. During his career, Rick won many distinguished teaching awards that included Montana's Inspirational Teacher of the Year. He also was instrumental in initiating the Advanced Placement program at Beaverhead County High School. After 40 years in education, he retired to travel and spend time with his family. Rick always said that he loved the community of Dillon and was proud of every student he taught.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Leonard and Rose Cadieux; and brother, Kenneth Cadieux.
Rick is survived by his daughters and sons-in-laws, Raeshelle and Steve Meyer of Ontario, Ore., Nichole and Erich Trumm of Omaha, Neb.; sister, Debbie Cadieux of St. Ignatius; grandchildren, Carly and Kyle Meyer, Morgan and Aiden Trumm, and a wonderful friend, Mona Stokes of Dillon; and numerous friends and students whose lives he touched forever.
Visitation with the family will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Brundage Funeral Home, Dillon, with a vigil service at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. A luncheon will be held following the service. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery at 1 p.m. Saturday.

I was in school with Rick at WMC & he was in many of the same classes I was in. He was such a great friend and we were all good friends at college. Rich had a wonderful personality and was so fun to be around. I send his family my sympathy & pray for each on.

Ricky Cadieux was a true leader as far back as his high school days at Anaconda Central. He was a credit to all who knew him. He had a great legacy and will truly be missed. My sympathies to the Cadieux family. God will surely enjoy Rick's company.

Mr. Cadieux was a great teacher, He always took extra time outside of class to help those who needed extra help, He took the time to teach me the things most learned in 7th grade and always pushed me hard to show me that I could accomplish things. Rick and I played high school football and basketball together in Anaconda. We would later play college football against each other for four years. Rick was not only very fine athlete, he was an awesome competitor. I am deeply saddened by his passing. Please accept my sincere condolences.

I am amazed at my classmate's accomplishments in his chosen life's work, and remember his respect for individual kids as we worked the Anaconda City Rec Baseball together for 3 of our college summers.
