Whiting - Carmen G. Augustine, 87, of Whiting, NJ, formerly of Somerville, NJ, peacefully passed away Thursday, May 3 2018, at RWJ University Hospital-Somerset, Somerville, with her loving daughter at her side.

Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico to the late Sofia Brandes Gonzalez and Joaquin Colon Gonzalez, she graduated from Liceo Ponceno Private School for Girls in Ponce.

At the age of 18, she moved to New York City to attend the Pratt Institute, with a major focus on fashion design. After graduation from Pratt, she was employed by Gimbels Department Store, New York City, as a buyer of women's clothing, where she met her future husband of 53 years, the late William G. Augustine (Bill). Having moved to NJ, she held several volunteer and professional positions, none closer to her heart than her work with the Somerset Youth Shelter in Raritan. Throughout this time she often contributed her language skills to various local organizations.

Carmen was predeceased by her son in law, Joseph Helfin; her brother, Dr. Fredrick Gonzalez; and two sisters, Anna Sofia Zucco and Gladys Vidal.

She leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, family, and friends; her daughter, Marina Augustine (Helfin) of Middlesex; her cherished cousins, Donna and Richard Shindell; her dear sister in law, Gloria McComas; and her beloved sister-friend, Kathleen Maurer.

At 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 22, a service, followed by inurnment, will be held at the B/G Wm. C. Doyle Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, 350 Provinceline Road, Arneytown.
