Joel Olmeda Obituary
AGE: 30 • Toms River
Joel M. Olmeda, age 30, of Toms River died Friday April 26, 2013 at home.
Joel was born in Lakewood living in Beachwood before moving to Toms River 15 years ago. He was a graduate of Toms River High School South Class of 2000 and was employed by Home Depot, Manahawkin, NJ.
Surviving is his mother and step-father Suzanne and Michael Skerchek of Toms River; his father Oscar Olmeda of Spring Hill, FL; his sister Tara Olmeda-Smith and her husband Robert Smith of Forked River, his two nephews Corey and Gavin, and his loving girlfriend Samantha Vergara. Joel will be missed by a large loving extended family and many friends. He will always be remembered for his creativity and his smile.
Visitation will be Wednesday 3-7pm at the Layton's Home For Funerals, Forked River. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral Thursday at 930 am at St. Barnabas Church, Bayville. Cremation will be private.

Joel not a day goes by that I dont think of you. From the times we spent together as childhood best friends playing sonic the hedgehog to eternal champions. To the time where you danced on top of your mothers iroc. You and I always had a everlasting friendship. As life grew us older and wiser we did spend less time together for our lives grew different. The times we did get together was like our lives never skipped a beat. I miss you dearly and hope you share a spot at the table for me when we meet again.

Dear Sue,Mike,Oscar,& Tara,I have been thinking of Joel this morning...I know his one year anniversary is coming up and I know how hard it's going to be...I feel so helpless in finding the right words to say that will ever lessen the pain in your hearts...but I believe there is so much that Joel left behind for you to smile, look at all the books he read and the books he wrote,the dimes you are finding all around Sue,when you look at Tara and especially the grandchildren their beautiful eyes like Joel's!!!He is definitely smiling at his nephews and their antics,it's like having a young Joel back,the wonderful memories will always overshadow the pain if you let it and you know Joel will want you to celebrate his life not mourn it! I didn't get to introduce myself to you at Joel's service in Forked River. I'd wanted to, but there were many people waiting to speak to you. I am the aunt of one of Joel's close friends, Christina. If I had the opportunity, I wanted to give you a big hug. I too lost a son, 4 yrs. ago. He was 21. I know there are no words that lessen the pain of child loss. But if I had hugged you that night, my hope was to give you hope..that you will make it through this..while this is the hardest thing you'll ever go through, I want you to know you aren't alone. There is a great support group, Compassionate Friends, for people who have lost a child or sibling. Siblings rarely come, but they are welcome. They meet once a month in Toms River. If you want more information, please e-mail me at [email protected] I haven't attended meetings in a while, but they did help me a lot, especially the first two years. Unfortunately, you will find out there are many many other bereaved parents...but those are the very people who will understand what you are going through--and without the support and understanding of other parents, I don't know if I could have made it this far. Joel, you were definitely one of a kind with a contagious smile. When we were close, you had a cassette tape collection bigger than any one else I knew, all organized in alphabetical order. Your bedroom was always clean and drakkar noir was your signature scent. You looked forward to Tuesdays because that's when the new music releases came out on cassette. You taught me how to spin records, when you were into that, and gave me my very own DJ name. You made clever jokes and laughed big at them. You will be missed. Rip Joel.
