Robert Gordon Obituary

Robert Charles Gordon of Chestertown, MD passed away July 12, 2025, at the age of 85.

Bob was born in Minquiadale, Delaware on November 30, 1939, the son of the late Rebecca Cann Gordon and William A. Gordon.

He worked with his father as a floor finisher until he determined that work was not for him and began to work as an apprentice bricklayer with A. Ventures Company. He then went on to work as a Job Superintendent for Ocean City Sabitino Company and as a Bricklayers Union Negotiator for Local #1 of Delaware. In 1978, he began his career as a construction trade and masonry teacher with Kent County High School. Bob taught the craft that he grew to know and love for 23 years at KCHS. During his time there, he had such a positive impact on so many of his students. Many of his students went on to pursue careers in construction some of whom have thriving local businesses to this day.

Bob was a member of the Minquadale, DE Volunteer Fire Department beginning at the age of 15 and served in the U.S. Army from 1962-1964.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing (especially perch) and loved crabbing on the Chester River. He was also an avid reader and always had a book or magazine close by.

Bob was many things but he was definitely a builder! Building numerous homes, decks or whatever anyone needed.

In addition to his parents and Mary Tjaden Gordon (his first wife) he was preceded in death by his siblings: William A. Gordon, Addie Sinclair, and John T. Gordon.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Sharon O'Toole Gordon; his children: Sherry G. Mitchell, Robin Betkey (Bob), Lisa Kauffman (Chris), and Robert William Gordon (Brittany); as well as 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will be held Sunday July 27, 2025, at 1pm at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Chestertown, MD, where all who knew him are invited to attend and share a lighthearted story.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Compass Hospice 160 Coursevall Drive Centreville, MD 21617 or a charity of your choice.
