Vernon F. Dunlap, of Carrollton and formerly of White Hall, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2025, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, surrounded by his loving family. He was 80 years old. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Vernon will be remembered for his kindness, strength, and unwavering love for his family and community.
He was born on December 2, 1944, in White Hall to Leo and Anna (Allen) Dunlap.
On June 19, 1965, Vernon married the love of his life, Donna Wallace. Together, they built a life filled with love, devotion, and cherished memories. Together their marriage was a true partnership, rooted in mutual respect and an unbreakable bond.
Vernon is survived by his wife of 59 years, Donna Dunlap of Carrollton; his sons, Todd (Debbie) Dunlap of Carrollton and Troy Dunlap (Joseph Mazzola) of St. Louis, MO,; his grandchildren, Nathan (Sarah) Dunlap and Katelyn Dunlap; his great-grandchildren, Hayden and Linley Dunlap and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Vernon dedicated 27 years of his life as a police officer in White Hall, with 11 of those years spent as Chief of Police.
Vernon had a deep love for the outdoors and was an avid deer and turkey hunter. He was also a member of All Saints Catholic Church, the White Hall Masonic Lodge #80, Ansar Shrine, and the White Hall Drag-O-Way.
Vernon had a way of making everyone feel special. His kindness, sense of humor, and ability to tell a great story made him a beloved presence in any room. He was a man of strong values, deep faith, and endless generosity, always willing to lend a hand to those in need.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 12, 2025 at All Saints Catholic Church in White Hall with burial at White Hall Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall. Masonic Rites will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the St. John's School Capital Campaign in his memory. Condolences may be left online at www.airsman-hires.com.
