James Christopher Buckner II, 74, died Saturday, October 1, 2022, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach after an extended illness.
Jim was born January 24, 1948, in Buffalo, NY, a son of the late Marion O'Brien Buckner and James Herbert Buckner.
He grew up in Kernersville, NC, and graduated from East Forsyth High School, where he lettered in golf, basketball, and football. He attended East Carolina University in Greenville, NC, receiving his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and an MBA. He moved to Myrtle Beach in 1980 and owned the Tally Ho Motor Inn and several other properties. Jim was active in the Hotel Motel Association, serving as its Chairman, and served on the Southern Innkeepers Association board. He founded Coastline Realty and Golf Trek, the premier golf package company on the Grand Strand.
Jim's priorities in life were always family, golf, the East Carolina Pirates, and the UNC Tarheels. He was an avid golfer. Jim held the course record at Oak Island Country Club, Farmstead, and Indigo Creek. He made seven hole-in-ones during his lifetime of golf. Jim was a true son of the game.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Pat; three daughters, Meredith (Parker) Smith of Murrells Inlet, Blair Sprunger of Surfside Beach, and Jamie Stewart of Myrtle Beach; five grandchildren, Cameron and Annabelle Smith, Sutton Sprunger, and Caroline and Harrison Stewart; former son-in-law, Steve Sprunger; two brothers, Mike Buckner and Patrick Buckner of Winston-Salem, NC; a niece and two nephews; and family friends, Don Edwards and Lee Davis. He was predeceased by many of his golf buddies.
His life will be celebrated on October 24, 2022, at Prestwick Country Club from 4-6 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of Jim to First Tee- Coastal Carolinas.
