Ray Skidmore Obituary

LITTLE RIVER | Ray Edwin Skidmore Sr., 76, of Little River, formerly of Charlotte, N.C., died Saturday, Dec. 10, 2005 at his home, surrounded by family.

Born on Feb. 27, 1929 in Charlotte to the late Bertha and Howell Skidmore, and raised by his grandmother, Stella Skidmore in the Belmont section of North Charlotte.

He graduated from Tech High School in 1947. Mr. Skidmore was in the automobile business for over forty years. His career began with a small used car lot in downtown Charlotte and later, he was owner of several new car dealerships in North Carolina. Mr. Skidmore was a member of Joppa Lodge #530 in Charlotte.

In 1980, Ray and his wife moved to North Myrtle Beach, where he continued his lifelong career of buying, selling, trading and developing. He was instrumental and a mentor to his sons and others in the start of their careers.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-three years, Evelyn Helms Skidmore; daughter, Susan Mayes (Terry) of Huntersville, N.C., sons, Ray Jr. (Christy) of Little River, Danny of Mooresville, N.C., Jeff (Patti) of Denver, N.C., Tommy (Deanna) of Cornelius, N.C., and Brad (Tracey) of North Myrtle Beach; 14 grandchildren, Adam, Todd, Trey, Raven, Savannah, Kristin (Mike), Dustin, Mandy (Jacob), Tiffany, T.J., Darla, Kelsey, Carley and Grayson. He is also survived by a half-sister and brother, Linda S. Grantham and Bobby Skidmore, and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Dorothy S. Huby, and Peggy Maxine Skidmore.

Visitation will be at Lee Funeral Home in Little River from 6 to 8 p.m., on Monday, Dec. 12, 2005. Funeral services will be held at Bible Fellowship Baptist Church on Hwy 57 South, Little River at 11 a.m. on Tuesday. Ray's pastor and friend, the Rev. Jack Rowan, will officiate. A graveside service will follow at North Myrtle Beach Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be his five sons and his son-in-law.
