Robert E. Edge
June 15, 1945-July 19, 2011
Longs
Robert E. "Coach" Edge, 65, died Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at his home.
Born on June 15, 1945 in Paterson, N.J., he grew up in Pompton Lakes, N.J., and graduated from Paterson State College in 1969 with a BA in Physical Education. During his time at Paterson State, he served as Sigma Tau Fraternity President from 1968-1969. Bob received his Master's Degree in Physical Education from Jersey City State College in 1987.
"Coach" started the inaugural varsity soccer program at Mahwah (NJ) High School in 1974 and coached there until 1978, winning a state championship his final year. He was awarded the "Coach of the Year" by the Ridgewood News. He then coached Ramsey Varsity soccer from 1978-1988, winning a league championship in 1988. "Coach" was once again named "Coach of the Year" by the Ridgewood News and installed into the Bergen County Coaches Association Victory Club.
Bob also was an assistant Varsity Baseball coach at Ramsey High School from 1978-1991, winning back-to-back Bergen County Championships in 1989 and 1990. He finished his baseball coaching career as Head Coach at Glen Rock (NJ) High School from 1993-1995.
Bob taught Physical Education and Health at Eric Smith Middle School in Ramsey, N.J. until he retired in 2000. Shortly after that, he moved to Longs, S.C.
In the past ten years since moving to the Myrtle Beach area, Bob forged many friendships, especially with Tommy Ingram, Gary Waglein, and Woody Poole, whom he spoke very highly of. In the past year, Jessica Thill grew to be an important and inspirational individual in Bob's life. In fact, he recognized her to be the strongest woman he has ever encountered. Jessie took care of Bob since day one of diagnosis and never left his side; she was with him until the moment he passed on, one of his last wishes.
Bob is survived by his son, Ryan and daughter-in-law Jeanice Edge of Flemington, N.J.; sisters, Patricia Kinney of Pompton Lakes, N.J., Jeanne Elmini and her husband, Jack, of The Villages, Florida; and three grandchildren, Connor, Riley and Brady, whom he adored and loved with all his heart.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 22, 2011 in Lee Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service.
A message of condolence may be sent to [email protected].

I just read of Bob's passing in the William Paterson Alumni magazine. Bob and I pledged together for Sigma Tau Fraternity. We crossed paths at a coaching clinic several years ago and had a great conversation. Our condolences to his family.

Bob was a very good friend and part of a group of coaches from Mahwah who were very close. He was a gentleman who would never turn you down when you needed his help. My wife and I were fortunate to have spent some time with him in SC just a couple of months ago. We'll surely miss him.

Dear Mr.Edge- Teachers that make a difference in a student's life are the ones they never forget. Thank you for making me believe in myself during those awkward middle school years. You helped me build enough confidence to LOVE P.E., a true feat. I loved how you remembered all your students when you started coaching at R.H.S., greeting all of us with your handsome smile. Thank you for being a memorable teacher in my life. Hey, I even married a PE teacher.
God Bless the Edge Family, I am so sorry for your loss. He was a great teacher and a great man. Please know how much he was valued by all his students. -Susan Green Manzi (Eric S. Smith School 1976-1979)RHS Class of '83

Dear Ryan and Family,
Your Dad will be missed more than you will know. Coach was a great man and was loved by most everyone who knew him. We know he is in a better place now and probably just finished 18 bogie free holes!

Dear Ryan and Family,

Your children were the angels in your Dad's life. He loved and adored them. Making him "Grandpa" was one of the best things and made him so happy. This is how I will remember him. May all the good memories remain with you and may you find comfort in them and in each other.
