Abdel Guirguis, whose determination and sharp mind took him from humble beginnings to overseeing Kansas City's convention center, passed away on March 11th, 2024, at the age of 89. Abdel was born on November 8, 1934, in a small Egyptian farming community.
In 1969, he immigrated from Egypt to the United States with his wife Odette, two young children, and just $200, seeking new opportunities. After landing in Kansas City, he started working as a low-level clerk for the city. However, through exceptional work ethic and intellect, Abdel steadily rose through the ranks. He became the director of the Kansas City Convention Center, managing the large facility until his retirement.
Abdel was preceded in death by his beloved wife Odette (1997) and long time partner Joy. He was known for his dedication and wonderful sense of humor. His family meant everything to him, and he took extraordinary pride in watching his American dream extend to the next generations.
He is survived by his daughter Maha, son Maged, grandchildren Christian (wife Raegan), Evelyn and Savannah; and great-grandchildren Edie and Anna. Abdel will be deeply missed by his loving family, friends and all who had the pleasure of knowing this remarkable man and his incredible life story.
