Abel L. Townsend Sr.

Abel L. Townsend, Sr., age 81, passed away on February 24, 2026, at Corning Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing. Born on November 21, 1944, in Corning, NY, he was the son of the late Abel O. and Luella M. (Quill) Townsend. On April 28, 1966, he married Cathy Cummings in Corning, NY. Abel worked as a laborer for Corning Incorporated, retiring after more than 30 years of dedicated service.

Abel will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He was a skilled woodworker who crafted many beautiful pieces of furniture and plant stands. In his younger years, Abel and Cathy enjoyed playing Monopoly and card games with family and friends.

Abel is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Cathy Townsend of Corning, NY; children: Abel L. Townsend, Jr. of Corning, NY, Raymond C. Townsend of Painted Post, NY, Nancy M. Austin of Corning, NY, Kathy E. (Mark) Snyder of TN, Robert B. Townsend of Elmira, NY; 19 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; sisters: Shirley Thomas, Bonnie Blodgett and Carol Nichols; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Abel was predeceased by his sister, Joyce Wilson; and brothers: Danny Townsend and Richard Townsend, Sr..

It was Abel's wish that there be no services. Carpenter's Funeral Home, 14 E. Pulteney St., Corning, NY has been entrusted with his care.
