Abelardo Alonzo "Sonny" Gomez Jr., 79, passed away on January 17, 2025, in Hawkins, Texas. He was born on June 6, 1945, in Freeport, Texas, to Abelardo Alonzo Sr. and Consuelo Mendiola.

 Sonny spent his early years in Freeport, where he laid the foundation for a life filled with love, creativity, and devotion. A gifted artist with a passion for automobiles, Sonny honed his craft in the auto paint and body industry, creating beautiful works of art on cars. His talent and dedication to his craft inspired many and left a lasting impression on those who knew him.

 Sonny was a man of deep faith and a devoted Christian. He was an active and cherished member of the First Christian Church in Hawkins, Texas, where his gentle spirit and love for the Lord touched the lives of many.

Sonny was known for his humility, kindness, and generosity and he had a unique ability to connect with people, making friends wherever he went. He was the kind of man who would give a hungry person his last tamale and open his doors to anyone in need.

Sonny is preceded in death by his mother, Connie Gomez, his father, Al Gomez, his sisters, Rita Doty and Diana Ramirez and his brother, Ronnie Gomez.

Sonny is survived by his daughters: Tina Marie Gomez-Hearn (John), Lorraine Gomez-Garcia, Stephanie Yvonne Davis, Heather Lynn Peters (Jim), and Krystal Lynn Gomez; his sisters, Rosalinda Salinas (Edward) and Sylvia Rangel and his loyal companion, Myra Clift. He also had eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren; and countless friends and extended family.

 Sonny’s life and legacy will be honored at First Christian Church in Hawkins, Texas, on Saturday, February 15, at 11 AM.

 A second celebration of his memory will take place on Monday, February 17, at 2 PM at Restwood Funeral Home Chapel in Clute, Texas.

Family and friends are invited to gather and pay tribute to a man who lived with a kind heart, a deep love for Jesus, and a passion for life.
