Ada Mae Matis, age 88 of New Castle, passed away the morning of January 19, 2025, at her home.
Born February 9, 1936, in New Castle, she was the daughter of Sam and Victoria (Micco) Tomasello.
She was preceded in death on Nov. 3, 2019, by her husband, Michael Raymond Matis.
After her graduation from New Castle High School, she attended Slippery Rock College where she completed her bachelor's degree. She furthered her education with both Penn State University and Harvard where she obtained her master's degree.
Ada Mae was a teacher for over 37 years with Rose Avenue Elementary School and George Washington Junior High School until her retirement.
She was a member of Holy Spirit Parish and with her caring and giving ways, she enjoyed helping with the many fundraisers for the Cancer Association. Among her many interests, she liked traveling, cruises, her pets and eating out at local restaurants.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
She is survived by seven cousins and many good friends. Ada Mae was grateful for her many caregivers who were such a help to her over the past several years.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, Jan. 23, from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle.
A Blessing service will take place on Friday, Jan. 24, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Castle View Gardens.
