MORENCI-Adam Gustave Johnson, 83, passed away on Friday, July 26, 2024, in Adrian, Michigan surrounded by his loving wife and family. He was born on May 13, 1941, in Detroit, Michigan. Adam had a zest for life that was rooted in a strong desire to help others.
Adam's professional journey was both varied and impactful. After moving from his birthplace, he ventured into public service, initially joining the Garden City Police Department. Then he went to college at Michigan State University where he earned a BA in Criminal Justice and a Masters in Police Administration.
He went to the State of Illinois to work as a consultant. He then transitioned to a significant role with IACP, International Association of Chiefs of Police in Washington D.C.
He then joined the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. This position allowed him to travel the world, with notable stops in Russia and Japan, enriching his experience and broadening his perspective.
Later, Adam became a beloved figure in Morenci, Michigan, where he was integral to the community through his ownership of the Johnson Gambles Hardware Store. He and his wife Gail owned and operated the store for 34 years.
He was a school board member and active leader with Kiwanis. He was passionate about programs such as the Christmas Wishing Tree, American Flag project and the Rex Riley Scholarship soup and pie fund raiser.
He met the love of his life, Gail, in high school while on a blind date in 1957. They were married on November 23,1963 and proudly raised two children, Ron and Jennifer.
Beyond his professional life, Adam was known for his unique combination of hobbies which included golf, fishing, and hunting. He was often seen at DeMor Hills golf course, where he ingeniously combined golfing with fishing, a testament to his inventive spirit and love for the outdoors.
He is survived by his loving wife, Gail; children, Ron (Jerri) Johnson and Jennifer (Joe) Morgan; grandchildren, Drew and Adam Morgan; and sister Sharon (Larry) Holtz. He was preceded in death by his brother Sam and sister Florence.
In accordance with Adam's wishes, cremation has taken place. An open house celebrating the life of Adam will be held on Saturday September 14th from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Morenci Eagles Club, 239 W. Main St. in Morenci. The family requests that those wishing to express sympathy consider making a donation to the Adam Johnson Memorial Scholarship fund, managed by the Morenci Kiwanis Club, supporting a cause close to his heart. Checks should be made out to the Adam Johnson Memorial Scholarship and can be mailed to Morenci Kiwanis Club PO Box 84 Morenci, MI 49256.
Adam's legacy is not just in the lives he touched, but also in the vibrant spirit and joy he brought to his every endeavor. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

When I first came to Morenci it was to open a print shop across the street from the hardware. We needed electrical equipment to wire the presses and typesetting machines and I went across the street to the hardware. I introduced myself to Adam and explained what I was doing and asked for a line of credit. He gave me a $500 line of credit just on my word and a handshake, as well as his friendship. That was Adam. Not a better man out there ever.
