Alan Levin Obituary

Alan Levin

November 14, 1940 - December 9, 2024

Alan Levin, age 84, passed away on December 9, 2024, in Galloway Township, NJ. Alan was born on November 14, 1940, to Rose and Meyer Levin in Philadelphia, PA. After graduating from South Philadelphia High School in 1958, he went on to earn a B.S. at Rider College in 1965 and an M.A. at Temple University in 1969. After graduation, Alan embarked on a life-long teaching career. He became a charismatic and beloved mentor challenging and inspiring his students at Hammonton and Oakcrest high schools before completing his teaching career at Absegami High School in 2001. In 1966, Alan faked an illness in front of the attending nurse for his mother at Albert Einstein Hospital in Philadelphia. He married that nurse, Judith Edelstein, on Christmas Day in 1966. Alan coached his two sons, Kevin and David, throughout their adolescence in Ventnor, NJ, where the family lived. Alan was an accomplished athlete. He enjoyed a great game of basketball or baseball with his friends, and he loved jogging on the Ventnor boardwalk. To honor Alan's athletic accomplishments, in 1999, he was inducted into South Philadelphia High School's Athletic Hall of Fame. His other passion was his love of old movies which he shared in his regular community newsletter column titled, "Movie Passion". Alan also supported his community as a volunteer for Sister Jean's Kitchen in Atlantic City, but his proudest accomplishment was leading a successful campaign for the preservation of the Kennedy Plaza on the boardwalk in Atlantic City in 1999. Alan always had time for his friends and members of his community. He expressed his friendship with probing questions, listened with sincerity and concern, but also expected the same in return. Alan loved his family: his two sons and their wives, Kevin and Michaela, and David and Jennifer, and especially his two grandchildren, Michael and Chelsea, who he cherished. But most of all, Alan loved and simply adored his beautiful wife, Judy, who he was devoted to for the 57 years of their marriage. In addition to his wife, children and grandchildren, Alan is survived by his brother, Marvin Levin and wife, Audrey; and sister, Michele Watkins; brother-in-law, Allen Edelstein.

A gathering will be held December 19th, from 9 to 11 a.m. with a service to begin at 11 a.m. at the Wimberg Funeral Home, 211 E. Great Creek Rd., Galloway NJ 08205. For directions and condolences, please visit Wimbergfuneralhome.com.

I barely knew Alan, although my father was his neighbor and friend.

When my father was dying a few years ago -- Alan showed remarkable kindness and wit. He could make my father laugh easily. He also showed deep empathy and caring.

I'm truly grateful my father had Alan in his life.

It sounds like many other people were also grateful.

I will miss my conversations with Alan at the Four Seasons Pool more than words can say. He was incredibly wise and thoughtful, and his beautiful wife Judy, whom I adore, was always by his side. Each summer, witnessing the love they shared with their sons and grandkids truly highlighted how profound this loss is. You will all remain in my thoughts and prayers. With much love,
Marilyn

"Mr Levin" taught me accounting 40 years ago. I was always fond of him. Such a caring, sweet person. Later in life, I worked with lovely Judy at Pomona hospital. I am saddened by this news. I am praying for all of you.

Mr Levin was a man who not just taught but showed he cared with his smile & eyes. Always a pleasure to attend his class. I spoke of him many times over the years, saying there should have been more teachers who taught & cared as he did.
You will always be remembered fondly & never forgotten.
Rest in Peace.
My deepest sympathies to your wife & family.

We are deeply saddened to learn of Alan´s passing. My husband and I made wonderful memories with Alan while teaching at Absegami and Oakcrest High Schools together. Alan was a kind, caring and devoted man and will be fondly remembered by everyone. May the Lord give comfort and peace to his family and friends at this time.
