Alan F. Schwantes, of Edgar and Wausau, WI, passed away at home on October 14, 2025, at the age of 78.
Alan was born January 3, 1947, in Milwaukee, WI; son of the late Lother and Eleanore (Methisen) Schwantes. He grew up in Edgar, WI, where he graduated from Edgar High School in 1965.
Following high school, Alan went on to study business and accounting at UW-Whitewater. He worked a variety of jobs but loved working with his summer carnival family throughout the upper Midwest. Alan never missed the opportunity to go and visit them when they were in the area.
Alan was an avid sports fan, while he enjoyed watching high school sports, he was first and foremost a Green Bay Packers fan! Until recent years, he was a season ticket holder. He rarely, if ever, missed a game on TV or radio. As a regular reader of the Wausau Daily Herald, he kept up on team stats. He was a Wisconsin Badgers fan for both football and basketball. He loved March Madness and watched as many games as possible. When he wasn't watching sports, he might catch up on his history programs or enjoy a western.
Alan lived a life of love and kindness. He was a hard worker who loved his family deeply and was proud to be a good friend to others. In fact, he found great fulfillment in being able to help others whenever he could. Going into memory care didn't stop him from being helpful; he often helped deliver the mail to fellow residents. Furthermore, Alan was not one to sit idle. At the apartment complex he lived in, he would pick up his neighbor's recycling on garbage day and it was not uncommon to see Alan shoveling the entrance to the building in a snowstorm. Alan's generosity and sense of humor will be sorely missed.
Alan is survived by his niece, MaryPat (Doug) Ochis of Shakopee, MN; and his nephews, Steven Schafer (Pat Champ) of Shakopee, MN, and Jon Peter Schafer of Florida.
Alan was preceded in death by his parents, Lother and Eleanore; his sister and brother-in-law, Mary C. and Eugene Schafer; and his aunts, Patricia Mathiesen, Gladys (Owen) Gering, Frances Trierweiler, Edna Seehafer, Marian Seidl, and Nora Hanson.
No formal services will be held for Alan. A private family burial will take place at St. John's Parish Cemetery in Edgar, WI.
Shuda Funeral Chapel is honored to be assisting the family.
