Alan John Southard, known affectionately as John to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2025, in Greer, South Carolina. Born on May 30, 1938, in Waukesha, Wisconsin, John's journey through life was marked by his intelligence, interesting character, and analytical mind, traits that endeared him to all who knew him.

John's early years in Waukesha laid the foundation for a life of service and dedication. He answered the call of duty and joined the United States Marine Corps in 1958. His commitment to his country was unwavering, and he served with distinction until his retirement as a Chief Warrant Officer III in 1977. John's military career was a testament to his resilience and leadership, qualities that he carried into his subsequent professional endeavors.

Following his military service, John went on to earn his bachelors degree. After college John transitioned into a successful career with Union Carbide, later known as KEMET, where he worked from 1977 until his retirement in 1997. His colleagues respected him for his thoroughness and his ability to navigate complex challenges with ease. John's professional life was characterized by the same level of excellence that he demonstrated in his military career.

John's personal life was rich with interests and community involvement. He was a skilled sailor, finding solace and joy on the water. His passion for model airplanes was more than a hobby; it was a reflection of his meticulous nature and love for intricate craftsmanship. A devout member of Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, John's faith was a cornerstone of his life, providing him with strength and comfort throughout his years.

Though predeceased by his beloved wife, Maria W. Southard, his brother Conway Southard, his sister Suzanne DeRemer, his brother-in-law Paul DeRemer, and his parents, Ivan and Vesta Southard, John's legacy lives on through his loving family. He is survived by his daughter, Monique Strange, his son, John Southard, and his granddaughter, Brittany Southard, who is married to Leigh-Ann Taylor. His memory will also be cherished by the many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who were blessed to know him.

John's life was a tapestry of dedication, love, and service. He approached every challenge with a keen intellect and a thoughtful perspective. Those who had the privilege of knowing John will remember him as a man of great character, someone who could always be relied upon for his wisdom and insight.

As we bid farewell to Alan John Southard, we celebrate a life well-lived, a life that touched so many others in profound ways.
