LEWISTON-Alan Charles Spencer, affectionately known as Al to his friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2025, in his hometown of Lewiston, Maine. Born on March 26, 1951, to the late Charles and Irene Spencer, Al's life was a testament to the enduring spirit of love, family, and joy in the everyday.
Al's journey began in Lewiston, where he grew up surrounded by a large and loving family. He was a cherished brother to Thomas and his wife Eileen, Patricia and her husband Kenneth, James and his wife Angela, Susan and her husband Richard, Peter, Nancy, and Charles and his wife Michele. Al's legacy continues through his son, Eric Spencer, his adored granddaughter, Brealynn, and his longtime companion of 24 years, Pauline Roberge. Al played a special role in the lives of Pauline's sons, Alan and Daniel, and her grandson Isiah, who affectionately called him Grampy. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of his many nieces and nephews, who will miss him dearly.
Al was a proud veteran, having served his country in the US Navy from 1970 to 1972 aboard the USS Enterprise. His time in the service was a formative experience, instilling in him a sense of duty and camaraderie that he carried throughout his life.
Following his military service, Al returned to Lewiston, where he remained an active and beloved member of the community. His education in the Lewiston school system was the foundation for a life of continuous learning and curiosity. Al worked for Auburn Public Works for 44 years as a Building Maintenance Tech I. Al's work history reflected his diverse interests and his commitment to involvement in his community.
Al's passions were as varied as they were fulfilling. In his younger years, he found freedom on the open road riding his motorcycle. He had a keen eye for treasures, often finding them in thrift stores or as "side-of-the-road" specials, which he invariably found a use for. Al's love for the great outdoors was evident to all who knew him. He cherished moments spent snowmobiling, cruising across the lake in his boat, or simply relishing the tranquility of nature.
Family was the cornerstone of Al's life. He looked forward to his Sunday dinners with family and the special bond he shared with his siblings during their once-a-month breakfast gatherings. These moments were the threads that wove the rich tapestry of Al's life, filled with laughter, stories, and the warmth of shared experiences.
Al's ability to find joy in life's simple pleasures was one of his most endearing qualities. He tended to Pauline's flower garden with the same care and attention that he gave to all his endeavors. Al leaves behind a legacy of love, loyalty, and an unmatched ability to savor the simple moments that make life truly beautiful.
A military service to honor Al's dedication and service to his country will be held at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery at 163 Mt. Vernon Rd, Augusta, ME on Wednesday June 18, 2025 at 10:00 AM. Following the service, a Celebration of Life will be held at the Community Center at Meadowview, 23 Spofford St., Lewiston, ME, where friends and family will gather to share memories and honor a life well-lived.
Al's story is one of a life embraced with enthusiasm and lived with an open heart. He will be remembered as a man who loved deeply, laughed heartily, and always found the silver lining. His spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have known him, and his memory will be treasured forever in the hearts of his loved ones.
Arrangements were made under the care of Albert & Burpee Funeral Home & Cremation Services 253 Pine St. Lewiston, 782-7201.
