Alan Stein, also known as "Famous Uncle Al", passed away on January 11, 2025 in Virginia Beach, Va. Alan was born in New York on February 7, 1937, and lived a long and storied life. He was the son of the late Sam and Irene Stein. He was a veteran of the US Army. While residing in New York he was a professional bowler, managed a bowling alley, and owned a sporting-goods store.
In 1974 Alan (Al) moved his family to Virginia Beach where he worked as Site Superintendent for Sir Galahad Homes. He made a name for himself at the old Tidewater Racquet Club as one of the best racquet ball players in town and was willing to challenge anyone to a match until he was in his early 70's. Al was an avid fan of men's slow-pitch softball and played for years in the Tidewater area. He loved to play poker, regularly playing with his friends and associates for many years. Al opened his first restaurant, "Steins Delicatessen", in Pembroke Mall and later opened "Al's Fast Foods" on Atlantic Avenue. Eventually, Uncle Al (a name he was proudly dubbed at a nieces wedding reception) opened up a little restaurant on Shore Drive called "Famous Uncle Al's Hot Dogs and Fries". Over the years numerous other locations of Famous Uncle Al's Hotdogs were opened with Uncle Al's involvement, some of which are still in existence today. He was particularly proud of his role in bringing the New York style Boars Head Brand of hot dogs to the Tidewater area. Quick to smile and an avid conversationalist, Uncle Al's character had a way of fostering laughter, excitement, and memorable moments. Those memories of Uncle Al will last in the hearts and minds of the fans of his unique personality.
Alan Stein is survived by a sister, a son and a daughter, several grandchildren, a great grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday January 28, 2025 at 4PM in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Rd Chapel. Interment will be held in Albert G. Horton Veteran Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers a charitable donations can be made to Hope for Life Rescue 610 Jack Rabbit Road, Suite3, Virginia Beach, VA 23451. Online condolences may be made to his family at hdoliver.com.

My late husband John and I were frequent patrons of Famous Uncle Al's on Shore Dr for many years. We'd sit at the bar and have conversations with Al over our mutual love of NY, Coney Island and poker. After my husband passed in 2012 I moved back to the area and became associated with his beautiful daughter. She makes the best tuna melts, her talent amazed me. I went to the Famous Uncle Al's on Holland Rd where I pick up my to-go orders during Covid and even after. That's the last time I saw Al. I'm so sorry to read about his passing and extend my condolences to his entire family. My heart goes out to you all especially Hailey.

Great guy and great soul. He and his happy team made stopping by for a hotdog and fries a joy. Every time. Always bright and alert and focused, he seemed to glow when he chatted with you, sharing just the right encouragement you needed to keep going--and appreciating life. He was one of the rare ones.

I'm so sorry to hear that Al has passed away. We met back in 1984 when I was manager of the Pioneer Federal Savings and Loan Branch next door to his Shore Drive location. He was a dear friend that made me laugh and always listened when I was having a bad day. Thinking of his entire family at this difficult time.

Al was a good friend to us and our daughter, Kathleen, for many years as she worked at several of the Famous Uncle Al stores in the mid to late '80s and even after that. He helped her buy her first car and he catered her wedding in 1992. He was smart, witty and I enjoyed his company immensely. I'm sending my thoughts and prayers to Roger and the rest of his family. Thank you, Al and RIP. Paula Fisher Olesen
