Alan Stein Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by H.D Oliver Funeral Apartments, Inc. - Laskin Road Chapel on Jan. 12, 2026.
Alan David Stein, 88 years young, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a life defined by love, joy, and deep connection to family, friends, and community.
For 64 devoted years, he shared a remarkable love story with his wife, Brenda. Married just six weeks after their first date, their partnership was a testament to commitment, laughter, and enduring devotion. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and his family was always at the center of his life.
An avid golfer and lifelong lover of the outdoors, Alan found his greatest happiness under open skies-hiking in the wilderness, walking the beach with his beloved dogs, and traveling throughout his life to places he cherished, including Jackson Hole, British Columbia, and mountain destinations where he enjoyed skiing. He had a deep affection for the dogs who shared his life over the years, each one a treasured companion.
Professionally, he was a respected retail executive at Hofheimer's Shoes, a family-founded and family-run business that proudly served its community for more than 100 years. His leadership, integrity, and dedication were hallmarks of his career.
Known for his friendly, social nature and infectious joy, Alan made friends everywhere he went. He was especially beloved by those at Wareing's Gym and throughout the many places he frequented, where people were drawn to his warmth, humor, and genuine interest in others.
He was a passionate sports fan, proudly supporting Old Dominion University and the University of Virginia. Some of his most cherished moments were spent attending basketball and football games alongside his son Andy, creating memories that will be treasured forever.
A committed leader and community member, Alan served as President of Ohef Sholom Temple and the Norfolk Sports Club, giving generously of his time and energy in service to others.
His greatest joy was his family-especially his grandchildren, Brantley, Emma, and Bennett, who were truly the apple of his eye.
He is survived by his loving wife, Brenda; his sons, Andy and John (and John's wife, Sarah); and his three beautiful grandchildren, Brantley, Emma, and Bennett, brother Bobby and wife Mimi, along with many friends and loved ones who will miss him deeply.
His legacy of love, laughter, generosity, and joy will live on in all who were fortunate enough to know him.
A memorial service will be held Friday January 16th at Ohef Sholom Temple at 1 PM with a luncheon reception immediately following the service. Online condolences can be made to the family at hdoliver.com.
