James Jackson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by H.D Oliver Funeral Apartments, Inc. - Laskin Road Chapel on Feb. 4, 2026.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James "Frank" Jackson, Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend who left us too soon on Wednesday, January 28, 2026 at the age of 76. He was born on January 3, 1950 in Norfolk, Virginia to James Jackson, Sr., and Ruth Murray Jackson and was raised in Chesapeake, Virginia.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Barbara, daughters Melissa Clark (Joshua), Sara, son, Brian (Heather), sister Ann Higgenbotham (Lee), brothers Tom and Bruce, grandson, Tolson and many nieces and nephews. Also left behind is his beloved Labrador, Tucker. He was preceded in death by his brother, William Earl Jackson.

He was an active member at First Baptist Church of Norfolk and deeply loved his church family. Frank was passionate about working for the Lord, always willing to serve wherever and whenever he was needed. He was involved in multiple ministries, including Food Distribution, Pastoral Hospital Visitation, the Deacon Board, and served on various church boards including the Facilities Ministry Team and Church Council. He was also a member of The Gideons International and served as the Scripture Distribution Chairman. Each year he and his wife, Barbara, were active in Bible distribution at Old Dominion University.

His whole life he had a love for music and for playing his guitar. In his high school days he was in a local band called "The Vikings", who played as the house band for local clubs. That passion never died. Years later The Vikings band got back together and played local gigs for a short while. Then he was approached about joining with another group called "Vinyl". Another band that played local gigs. His last opportunity to play would be in the church's rhythm section, which he always enthusiastically accepted when asked. He often said using his God given talent in that way gave him great joy and was always playing for the Lord.

He retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard after 41 years and then spent the following 10 years working for various government contractors. He loved that retirement life freed him up to be able to devote his time to serving God in any way he could.

Over the last couple of years Frank embraced a new adventure when a friend invited him to help out and learn to sail. He spent countless hours working on a sailboat and learning to sail, approaching it with curiosity, patience and joy.

Frank will be remembered for his gentle spirit, humble heart, unwavering work ethic, and quiet compassion. His legacy lives on through his family, the music he nurtured, the service he gave, and love he shared so freely.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2026 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Norfolk, 312 Kempsville Road, Norfolk, VA 23502. A reception will follow in the Grand Lobby.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations be made to First Baptist Church Norfolk (First Forward Fund) 312 Kempsville Rd., Norfolk, VA 23502. Or to The Gideons International, P.O. Box 140800, Nashville, TN 37214-0800
