He was born on September 29, 1956 to Theresa "Mattie" Dunkley (Oldman, Akiwenzii), of Redby in Red Lake, MN and James Frank Dunkley of Rice Lake in White Earth, MN.
He journeyed to the land of everlasting happiness in a place where his spirit will soar among the stars, in a nation with our relatives before him, among our ancestors, and with all the Manidoog that watch over us. As a proud, full-blooded Red Lake Anishinabe Ogichidaa, Sam's unwavering dedication to helping others was evident to all. He was a true force of nature, an AIM Brother and Warrior in the purest sense of the word. A trusted confidant and source of strength for those around him and his impact on the lives he touched is immeasurable. His wisdom, guidance, and teachings will forever shape the lives of those who share in his teachings. Sam had a profound love for living life the only way he knew how – the Anishinabe way. He was a father, a brother, and a cherished member of the many circles and communities he danced in, often offering himself in the ceremony of Sundance, which was a tradition that he intensely cherished. May his spirit soar among the stars and his legacy live on in our hearts.

Preceded in death by his mother Mattie in 2016, his father James in 1996, and sisters Patricia "Patsy" Eylandt (1998), Debra "Debbie" Dunkley (2018), and Sandra "Bambi" Sayers (Dunkley) (2021).
Survived by his loving sons Orion and Trudell; devoted sisters Barbara "Hubba" Ramos, Regina "Reggie" Dunkley, Roberta "Birdie" Dunkley, Karen "Tiny" Davis (Dunkley) and Valerie Dunkley; brother Michael Dunkley; many other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, please send plants that can be buried next to him in his final resting place.
An all-night wake will be held Monday, October 30, 2023 beginning at 6:00 PM at Church of Blessed Kateri. Please bring a dish and a story to share.
Funeral service for Sam Dunkley will be held on Tuesday, October 31, 2023 at 10:00 AM at Gichitwaa Kateri. Please bring a traditional dish offering for Sam's send-off ceremony.
Interment will be held at Riverview Cemetery, St. Paul, MN.
