Albert DeWayne Griffin, age 84, of Mt. Juliet, passed away on October 30, 2025. He was born in Decatur, Alabama to the late Woodrow and Jewel Griffin.
Whether you knew him as Albert, DeWayne, Grif, Dad, or Papa, you loved him. A proud veteran of the U.S. Army, Grif served for thirty-one years, including three command assignments in Vietnam and the U.S. When he retired from the Army in 1991, he held the rank of Colonel and served as the Director of Personnel for the Tennessee Army National Guard. He was a devoted husband, father, and churchman. He was married to Sue Griffin, the love of his life, for nearly 52 years until her death in 2019. They have one son, Brad, who lives with his family in Malibu, CA, where he teaches at Pepperdine University. Grif dearly loved his church family at the Mt. Juliet Church of Christ, where he served as an elder for thirty years (1991-2021). An avid runner, he completed more than two dozen marathons in his lifetime, including the U.S. Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C., on October 30, 2011, at the age of 70. He was a mentor, friend, and role model, and his passing leaves a hole in our hearts that will not be easily filled. Praise God for a life lived in service to Jesus Christ.
Grif was preceded in death by his parents, Woodrow and Jewel Griffin, his wife, Sue Wright Griffin, and an aunt, Helen McCann.
