Albert William Gundrum, age 87, passed away on June 20, 2025. He was the loving son of the late Albert and Mary (Matson) Gundrum and the beloved husband of Loretta (Kelly) Gundrum.
He was the devoted father of Amy Sue (Frank) Garvin, Todd (Jena) Gundrum, and the late Angela Jo (John) Matson. Cherished grandfather of Max Gundrum, Josh (Becca) Matson, Elisabeth HusVar, Maggie HusVar, Sam Gundrum, Kaina Garvin, and Isaac (Amber) Garvin. Proud great-grandfather of Oliver Garvin. Dear brother to Anne (David) Jeffers, Brother in law to Cecelia (Al) Riedinger and the late Eileen (Gary) Scott. Beloved uncle Laura Riedinger, Debbie (Mick) Namoski, Wayne Riedinger and John (Mindy) Scott and great uncle to Garrison and Mackinley Scott.
Albert was a proud graduate of Colerain High School, and went on to earn both his undergraduate and master's degrees from Xavier University. He began his teaching career at Immaculate Conception school in Celina, Ohio before continuing with the Northwest Local School District.
Al established a distinguished basketball career:
·In 1956 he was the first player from Colerain high school to receive a 4-year athletic scholarship for basketball from Xavier University.
·In 1958 he played at Madison Square Garden in New York City for Xavier University when they won Basketball's National Invitational Tournament (NIT).
·In 1962 he was awarded the Ohio high school basketball coach of the year for his division of small schools.
·His coaching efforts at Immaculate Conception school, Colerain high school, Northwest high school, Xavier University and Thomas More University provided many exciting moments for the players and fans.
·In 2023 he was recognized for his contributions to the sport when he was inducted into the Greater Cincinnati Basketball Hall of Fame.
Most of all he was a teacher, along the way he taught and coached many fine players and students of which a remarkable number still kept in touch with him. It was a testament to his skill at not only coaching young men in a sport but preparing young people for life itself.
He found great joy in spending time with his family and treasured those moments deeply. He enjoyed attending Xavier Basketball games as well as the sporting events of his grandchildren. In his earlier days he enjoyed playing golf and taking trips on his motorcycle. What he enjoyed most of all was spending time on his boat at Indian Lake with his children, grandchildren and his wife, Kelly.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the memorial service at 12:00 noon, at Neidhard Young Funeral Home, 7401 Hamilton Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio 45231.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association in his name.

Dear Kelly and family, I´m so, so sorry in the passing of Coach. He was my Coach at ICHS in Celina and he was fun to play for. A players Coach. We stayed in touch over the years and in 2012, Coach and Kelly attended our 50 year reunion dinner of the basketball team. That´s when Kelly became part of the IC family. He was a great Coach, teacher and friend with a ready smile and a quick wit.
Love, David Myers.
