Albert Schorre Obituary

Albert Wilford Schorre Jr.
01/21/1947 - 08/06/2025
Al W. Schorre Jr. of Wellington CO passed away peacefully on Aug 6, 2025, surrounded by his family in San Angelo, TX. He was born in January of 1947 in Austin, TX to parents Albert and Pat (Flournoy) Schorre.

Al attended Austin High School and enjoyed spending time on the lake as a young man. Shortly after his time in the Texas National Guard he attended the University of Texas at Austin and was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, where he was vice president of the bachelor's club. Later he finished school at the University of Texas Law School where he was licensed to practice law since 1973. He was also licensed to practice with the United States Supreme Court. At this time, he met the love of his life Elizabeth Schorre and they started a family in the Austin area before moving to Midland, TX.

During his time in Midland, Al was a partner at Stubbeman Mcrae law firm handling oil and gas litigation. Then his true calling to serve the people of West Texas came when he became District Attorney from 1985-2007. During his time as District Attorney he held many memberships and accreditations such as being appointed by governor George W. Bush as chairman to the governor's drug policy advisory board, and Texas criminal justice task force along with being a certified peace officer. Al's fondest memories were spending time on his ranch in Cross Cut with his family. Upon his retirement he moved to northern Colorado to be with his family and grandkids and enjoy his love for horses, the western way of life and rodeo.

With all of his professional achievements and success in his career he will always be remembered by us as a cherished husband, a loving father and hero of a grandad as well as a dang good storyteller. Proceeded in death by his parents and his favorite horse Superman. Al is survived by his wife Elizabeth Schorre, and son Wil of Wellington, CO, and son Hunter and wife Shonna, and grandchildren Cutter and Savannah of San Angelo, TX. Along with a crew of truly blessed friends he called family and a surly horse named Bob.

As a young reporter at the Midland Reporter-Telegram in 1986, I was very fortunate to meet and get to know Al when he was district attorney. Midland was a popping town for news, always, and Al was always fair and open and as helpful as he could be under the circumstances. I saw him frequently in those days and remember fondly he would only call me by my last name. Last year we were able to reconnect and talk about a particular case from the old days - it was wonderful to see him at home in Fort Collins and and get to know Elizabeth a bit for the first time. He was one of a kind and I will always miss him.

Schorre, as we called him, was a great guy. I worked with him at the law firm, and when I needed help with a divorce, - even though that was not his area of law - he was right there offering to take care of everything for me with good advice and friendship. After I left the firm and he was District Attorney, I had an odd situation come up with a now defunct airline. When I got home, I found that my suitcase had been opened and some of my possessions were missing. After I'd called the airline and been told their mind-boggling policy, I had no idea who to call, so I called Schorre. I told him I'd spoken to the rep from the airline who told me, "Once your suitcase is out of your hands, it is no longer our responsibility." I said to the woman, "You mean it's your responsibility when it's at my house in the closet?" She said, "Now, now." You can imagine the stunned silence from both me, and then when I told Schorre. He had me repeat this stupid policy just to make sure he understood it, then he said he'd call me right back. I waited for only a few minutes, when he called and without preamble, told me that I was receiving a check to compensate me. Then he added, "I don't think they'll be around long." He was right. I'm sure his family and close friends miss his laughter and his compassion. He was a good man.

Being a Bailiff for the District Courts it was my pleasure to work around Al and protect him if need be. He was an excellent attorney and a great storyteller. He was very good at trapping a witness into saying what he wanted them to admit. I will miss Al as he was only 10 days older than me.

Al hired me to work in the DA's office in 2000. Best decision I ever made. 25 years later I am still here. He still called occasional to check on the office and me and how things were going. He always had a smile on his face and was always interested in how you were doing. He is going to be greatly missed. Prayers and condolences to all of his friends and family.

Al was a true friend to everyone he met and had a smile that was always upbeat. He was fun to work with in the courtroom, his ability to work the courtroom was awesome. Great to meet outside the office. Best boss ever

Once I was in a jury pool and part way through the voir dire our District Attorney, Al, asked for a "reshuffle" of the candidates. Either side can make that request once. Afterwards I asked him why, and he told me, with his characteristically warm smile and "ah shucks" manner, that the defendant was an attractive woman and there were too many young men in the first few rows of the jury pool. He was one-of-a-kind and always put me in a better mood.

During my time at Midland PD I had the pleasure of working with Al while he was District Attorney. He was always professional and a great prosecutor. He handled several high profile cases while I was an investigator at MPD. He was a great guy to work with. My condolences to the family and friends. May God bless you all at this difficult time.

Cindy and I are so sorry to hear about Lucky. At our last conversation with Lucky in San Angelo, he shared that the move was helping his condition and we were planning a trip out there to visit. I will really miss him.

One of my very, very favorite people of all time. A really good guy. Met him in 1978 when he was 1st assistant DA in Bell County, followed him (unknowingly) to Midland in 1979, where we became very good friends and were partners until he became, far and away, the best DA Midland has had in my 46 years here.
